Ranchers recorded a legal dispute against Transpower to prevent the organization from raising arches over their homesteads. The arches would possess their valuable land and furthermore ruin the standpoint of the territory. To put it plainly, the ranchers needed remuneration. There were three potential arrangements were; full pay for ranchers by Transpower Company, the utilization of an elective course for the transmission arches or the work of underground links. The foundation of 10km of underground links was in progress however the ranchers were not fulfilled (Boyes, 2005). During the period 2006/2007 Louise Upston, who was the individual from parliament of Taupo, sued Transpower. She didn't need the arches to cross her homestead and different peopleââ¬â¢s ranches. Sadly, The Environment Court controlled against her and approved Transpower to continue. This demonstrated how decided the administration was to accomplish its objectives. Transpower consented to remunerate 300 and eight land proprietors $165 million. Every proprietor of land was repaid with in any event $500,000, however some got more in correspondence to the size of land involved purchase arches (Tocker, 2012a). New Zealand is a created nation and along these lines the 220kV force isn't sufficient. The organization needed to build the ability to 400kV. The Resource Management Act, assessed in 2004 supported Transpower. It gave the administration capacity to control property proprietorship to ensure the administration interests. Shockingly, the ranchers from Waikato had an alternate assessment. They expected that the arches would cost them a fortune because of the harms of property during the development procedure (Contrafed Publishing, 2010). Evidently, the ranchers reprimanded the Transpower for utilizing arches. This hypothesis is very much bolstered and there are many explanation behind itââ¬â¢s support. One fundamental explanation is that nobody truly understands and The Big Bang Theory appears to be outlandish however more sensible than whatever other thoughts that there are out there. A portion of the significant thing to think about the enormous detonation to comprehend are the start and the couple of moments following the very. Additionally what for the most part has occurred since the at that point. It is imperative to know speculations of how it will end also, and to hear a balanced point of view, I feel it helpful to have a portion of different prospects sketched out. The best spot to begin is the start. à à à à à One of the things that cosmologists are not yet sure about is simply the Big Bang. It isn't yet conceivable to offer a complete response to the inquiries: what was the Big Bang and for what reason did it occur? In any case, there has been a lot of hypothesis as of late regarding this matter, and it may not be some time before a conclusive, or practically authoritative, answer will be announced. For the second we will essentially accept the Big Bang as it is given, a tremendous blast where reality started extending. Realize that space itself started in the Big Bang. IT is enticing to think about the universe before the Big Bang just like a tremendous, unbounded, region of void space, similar to the space between the system bunches today. The Big Bang, at that point, would have flung matter into this nothingness, yet this isn't what occurred. Space itself was made during the Big Bang. Einstein and every single ensuing cosmologist have seen space as being as genuine as is sue. Indeed, physicists currently see void space as an ocean of ââ¬Å"virtual particlesâ⬠. So space is currently growing alongside the cosmic systems and stars that exist with it and has been extending since the time the Big Bang. à à à à à Actually, cosmologists really have a more clear image of what the universe resembled during the period directly after the Big Bang than they are about the universe today. The explanation behind this is universe was exceptionally straightforward, in correlation, at that point. The universe was loaded up with a hot soup of particles like a hot gas caught in a crate. The photons in the enormous microwave bac... ...re is just so much vitality accessible known to man for the structure of new stars. Similarly as the law of thermodynamics reveal to us that a shut universe canââ¬â¢t go on always, so they disclose to us that new stars can't continue being made everlastingly in an open universe. In the long run the last star will cease to exist and won't be supplant. The proton will inevitably rot. After around a billion years, all molecules will self-destruct, and matter as we probably am aware it will stop to exist. The universe will be a tremendous ocean of leptons and courier particles. à à à à à One primary, however unsupported, hypothesis is that the universe was made by God. This hypothesis isn't excepted in mainstream researchers in light of the fact that in has no proof to back it up. That doesnââ¬â¢t mean it isnââ¬â¢t a chance. There are a couple of different speculations of the manifestations of the universe, yet no different hypotheses are as excepted as the theory of prehistoric cosmic detonation. A portion of the significant stuff to realize that I have secured is the times directly after the Big Bang, the Big Bang it self and a couple of the potential endings to the universe. I trust with this data you can have a superior comprehension of the universe, its creation, and itââ¬â¢s endings. withlockkahfang1987http://www.blogger.com/profile/00732669377088453714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4192152194153994705.post-79682374854736312352020-08-20T00:01:00.001-07:002020-08-20T00:01:05.540-07:00Retirement Planning How to Plan for a Successful RetirementRetirement Planning How to Plan for a Successful Retirement Quick Links: 7 Retirement Myths Debunked · Online Investment Tools · 6 Saving Strategies · 5 Investments to Avoid · 3 Tips to Get Started Youth is wasted on the young. Often, money is, too. Back in my corporate days, when I managed scores of retail stores and hundreds of employees, I stressed the importance of planning for retirementâ"as well as saving for future goalsâ"with every person I hired. Before the start of their very first shift, I would sit down with each new team member and show them how to save for retirement without stress, worry, complexity, or pain. Within a few minutes, I could literally see the difference in their physiology as trepidation drained from their facial features and, after we spent 30 minutes examining their options, confidence began to take over once they realized planning for retirement is much simpler than they thought. Most of these employees hadnt given much thought to saving for the future: maybe theyd heard their parents or spouses maunder about stocks and bonds and mutual funds, but they hadnt considered which path to take because planning for the future, especially with respect to finances, is overwhelming, daunting, boring. There are so many options, so many so-called experts, so many ways to screw things up. So, like many of Americans, they stood stuck in analytical paralysis, opting instead to postpone the decision for another time in some nonexistent hypothetical future. You know, one day. One day: these two words are dangerous because they give us an excuse to shelve important decisions that radically influence our future. Waiting for one day to arrive doesnt solve the problemâ"it makes it worse. Each day we wait, the worse it gets. Just as with my employee orientations of yesteryear, I want this essay to serve as an inspirational and informative sit-down in which I clear the fog of decision-making and help you, the reader, make an informed decision based on what Ive done with my own financial future. I truly believe that after reading this step-by-step process, you can plan for retirement in less than an hour. Using screenshots and my personal finances as a concrete example, I provide the necessary tools and a step-by-step strategy for you to quickly understand how easy it is to begin saving for retirement, regardless of where you stand on the socioeconomic ladder. Not only retirement, thoughâ"I also want to help you save for other future objectives: establish a Safety Net emergency fund, build wealth with smart investments, and own your house outright, if thats a dream of yours. And most importantâ"I want it to be simple, because I know, based on years of experience, if I can make the complex concept of retirement planning simple, then you have a much better shot at getting started immediately. Ultimately, I hope to eliminate the fear of financial planning and help you realize its simpler than you think. 7 Retirement Myths Debunked Before I get to my examples, Ill allay your fears by addressing a few of the worries Ive heard throughout my years of helping others set up retirement accounts: Myth 1. Im too old to save for retirement. I frequently hired employees who were older than I wasâ"often in their forties and fiftiesâ"with no retirement-savings plan. Fear had long ago set in, and they figured it was too late. They were stuck; they had missed their opportunity. Not true. While its true that youre better off starting at age 25 than 50, it is also true youll be better off starting at age 50 than, say, 70. Then again, 70 is a better start than 90, isnt it? The past is the past. We must stop peering at the rearview and instead look ahead toward the horizon. As long as youre still breathing, its never too late to start. Its never too early, either. Myth 2. Im too young to save for retirement. Too young? Are you insane? If youre younger than 30, you have it made! Young people, no matter your tax bracket, have a significant opportunity to become truly wealthy thanks to the power of compound interest. Someone who invests $25,000 by age 25, with a 12% rate of return, will have more than $2 million by age 65â"even if he or she doesnt add another dollar after age 25. Conversely, if that same person waits until age 30, he or she will have to contribute more than three times as much to achieve the same outcome. The lesson? Compound interest is the best way to grow your money over the long haulâ"so start while youre young. To visually illustrate the difference between starting at age 25 vs. 35, check out this Business Insider graph: Myth 3. I dont make enough money to save for retirement. Actually, there is no reason you shouldnt retire a millionaire. Thats right: virtually everyone, even minimum-wage earners, has the opportunity to be a millionaire when they retire. It sounds too good to be true, but the math proves otherwise: a 25-year-old who sets aside only $23 per week will retire with more than a million dollars if the money is invested properly (12% rate of return). Okay, so maybe youre not 25 anymoreâ"me, either! Thats all rightâ"us older folks simply need to adjust accordingly. Betterment has an investment-and-retirement calculator to help you understand exactly how much money you need to save based on your age and financial objectives. Myth 4. Inflation will hurt my retirement nest egg. This is the only myth that is partially true; however, its truth is irrelevant. While it is true $100 dollars ten years from now will probably possess less buying power than $100 today, the flip side of that coin is also true, and considerably more important: your $100 ten years from now will be worth infinitely more than your friends $0 invested. In fact, solid investments are the only way to outpace inflation. It is better to invest your $100 than keep it in a bank or under your mattress. Myth 5. Id rather spend my money on something else. When intentions are good, this excuse occasionally sounds like the most compelling reason to avoid saving for the future. True, we sometimes cling selfishly to money, using our income to purchase superfluous trinkets of ostensible success (new cars, shiny gadgets, accoutrements of consumerism), but frequently we want to use our money to contribute beyond ourselves (charities, nonprofits, and loved-ones in need). Contributing to others is certainly admirable, and I believe giving is living, so I want you contribute generously, but Ive found the best way to help others is to help yourself firstâ"the best way to give generously is to have more to give. Investing in yourself first helps you flex your giving muscle. Theres a reason airlines tell you to secure your own oxygen mask before helping others: if its easier to breathe, its easier to help people in need. Myth 6. The stock market isnt safe. Translation: you dont understand the stock market. Thats okay: I dont completely understand the stock market, eitherâ"not intimately anyway (I am not a financial advisor, nor do I play one on the Internet). The only people who must have an advanced understanding of the stock markets intricacies are stock brokers, day traders, and fund managers. Rather than allocating several hours a day to learn the nuances of mutual funds, index funds, and individual stocks, I choose to use an investing service that takes the guess work out of investing. It is true any investment introduces risk into the equation, but long-term investing in the stock market has proven to be the best way to grow your retirement savings: over the last 25 years, including 2008s steep decline and subsequent Great Recession, the market has averaged a rate of return of nearly 11%. Even when you account for 1929s Great Depression, the market has averaged greater than 9% growth over the past 100 years (source: Morningstar). Investing in the market is the most stable good-growth investment one can make in the long-term, especially when using online tools that help you outperform the market, many of which are discussed in this essay. Myth 7. I dont have enough time or knowledge to manage my retirement savings. Its true you and I will likely never have as much financial wisdom as the experts, but thats precisely why we must seek out tools developed by trusted, reputable experts. Although Im usually a do-it-yourself kind of guy, I dont DIY my investment strategy; rather, I did my research and found online investment tools that allow me to control my money without being overly controlling. I dont want to constantly scrutinize my investmentsâ"tweaking and reacting out of fear every time the market goes up or downâ"but I dont want to fly blind, either. Rather than flying the plane myself, I put the best possible pilot in the cockpit. Online Investment Tools I manage the vast majority of my personal finances using Betterments online software. Of course, Betterment isnt the only game in townâ"there are plenty of viable options: Wealthfront, Vanguard, Fidelity, Charles Schwab, and a slew of others. However, when comparing Betterment vs. Wealthfront vs. Vanguard vs. Fidelity vs. Schwab vs. a bunch of other reputable online brokers, there are a handful of important reasons, according to Betterment, to choose their service: Easy to use. Because I avoid complexity, I knew whichever online-investment firm I chose, it had to be easy to use. Reputation. Betterment is the largest online automated investment service for a reason. Their portfolio is designed to achieve optimal returns at every level of risk. Through diversification, automated rebalancing, better behavior, and lower fees, Betterment customers can expect 4.3% higher returns than a typical DIY investor. No-cost setup and low fees. I am not a millionaire (at least not yet), so I cant afford to waste money on setup costs and fees. Unlike many investment firms, Betterment does not charge to sign up for their service. That is correct: its absolutely free to establish a Betterment account. Better yet, their fees are the lowest around. I remember paying 300 basis points (3.00%) to my previous local broker, but now I pay only 15 basis points (0.15%). No, thats not a typo: fees are often 20 times lower with Betterment. This is especially relevant considering the power of compound interest. By not charging for trades or transactions, Betterment manages their customers portfolios for far less than it would cost at even a discount brokerage; plus, their fees only get lower as your assets grow. Not only for retirement. As youll see in the following Savings Strategy section, not only do I use Betterment for my retirement planning, but I also use it to house separate accounts for my personal Safety Net, Wealth Building, and House Fund. By deferring a little money from my checking account to my Betterment account each month, I keep myself safe from spending temptations. Because my money is invested appropriately, it grows more than it would were it sitting in checking or savings accounts. Vanguard index funds. Vanguard, a company well-known for its integrity, has been the best place to invest in high-yield index funds for nearly 40 years. What are index funds? Index funds aim to replicate the movements of an index of a specific financial market (for example, the SP 500 is a popular index), so its like investing your money in an entire index, as opposed to mutual funds, which pool money from many investors to purchase a limited number of stocks. While there is a slightly higher potential upside for mutual-fund investments, I prefer index funds because of their considerably lower fees, relative stability, and reliability. I have used Vanguard for both personal and business investments in the past, and thats one of the primary reasons I chose Betterment: Betterment is essentially a well-built storefront for Vanguard, which I trust. So, with Betterment, I get the best of Vanguard plus at least three additional Betterment benefits: Automatic Portfolio Rebalancing. Remember that 90s cookware infomercial: Set it and forget it!? Well, I have very little desire to learn the mechanics of portfolio rebalancing and dividend reinvesting, but with Betterment, everything is automatedâ"even deposits, if youd like. Once I established my Betterment account, I was able to effectively set it and forget it. Sure, I still check in quarterly to take a peek at my financial growthâ"which is pretty cool because their web-based interface is beautifulâ"but I know the best strategy, once everything is set up, is to let the money grow and grow and grow without fooling with it. Tax-loss harvesting. Tax-loss harvesting is the practice of selling a security that has experienced a loss. By realizingâ"or harvestingâ"a loss, investors are able to offset taxes on both gains and income. The sold security is then replaced by a similar one, maintaining the optimal asset allocation and expected returns. Basically, Betterment systematically finds embedded capital losses to lower investment taxes and increase after-tax returnsâ"and they do this for free. (Note: I logged into my account today and saw Ive had $57.89 in losses harvested in the first three months of this year.) Beautiful interface. See Easy to use above. Betterments website takes all the clunkiness out of old-time paper-trail investing. 60-second rollovers. Rolling over a 401(k) from a former employer can help you take control of your retirementâ"thats what I did with my old Fidelity 401(k) account: I rolled it into a Traditional IRA. Betterment offers rollovers that take less than a week on average, and they have rollover concierge available to assist you every step of the way, which made my rollover simple. (You can rollover other accounts, too: 403(b), 457(b), Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, and other similar retirement accounts.) RetireGuide. Betterments optional RetireGuide feature will make recommendations for your non-Betterment 401(k) and taxable accounts, as well as recommend what kind of IRAs you should fund. You can even look at scenarios comparing whether or not social security will exist in the future, since that is a major concern for many folks (myself included). This free feature even shows what kind of income you can withdraw during retirement. Diversity. Betterment uses years of investment research to construct a globally diversified, passive portfolio based on Modern Portfolio Theory. Their customers own exchange-traded funds (ETFs) representing up to 12 asset classes. In plain English: diversification is the key to properly managing your wealth through market upswings and downturnsâ"Betterment provides this diversity. Free resources. For the casual investor like myself (read: non-expert), I appreciate the plethora of financial advice Betterment regularly doles out. Once I became a customer, they began sending me occasional email reminders and advice about my finances (no spam, everâ"only helpful advice). It is the first time I can remember enjoying reading about financesâ"because they made it easily digestible and applicable to my personal situation. Todays technology is making investing easier, safer, and simpler than ever. You used to have to hire a local broker and hope he or she had your best interests in mind. While theres nothing inherently wrong with a local-broker approach (there are many wonderful brokers out thereâ"Ive dealt with several), Ive found that I feel more informed, more confident, more focused, and more secure with the advanced tools being made available online in todays investment industry; plus, Im grateful to pay considerably lower fees, which helps my money grow more quickly (remember the power of compound interest). To be as transparent as possible, not only am I sharing my financial information in this article (including screenshots below), but its worth noting that The Minimalists used to be an affiliate partner for Betterment, but we opted out of that program recently because it restricted our personal ability to freely invest our money. That said, I still use Betterment to manage my money. Even though Ryan I dont have an affiliate relationship with Betterment, which means we dont receive anything for recommending their service, their firm is the place I trust most to manage my investments. If that ever changes, Ill update my viewpoint here at TheMinimalists. 6 Tactics: JFMs Savings Strategy The best way for me to help you save for the future is to show you my recipe, that is, how I manage my own finances step by step: this way you can follow the entire recipe or select ingredients that work best for you. Strategy Overview: Of the six tactics listed below, I use Betterment to manage the first four: Safety Net, Traditional IRA, Build Wealth, and House Fund. Here is a screenshot overview of my Betterment account five weeks into the calendar year 2015: Now, looking at only the numbers, its easy for me to say, Wow! That guys loaded! Wellâ"not exactly. First, if I were to retire today, $176k wouldnt be enough money because, ideally, one wants to have enough saved to live off the interest, pay taxes, and outpace inflation. Thus, if I wanted to bring home, say, $30,000 a year, Id need to have approximately $500,000 saved, earning 12% interest (2% for inflation, 4% for taxes, and the remaining 6%â"$30,000â"for income). And second, of course, Im not loaded. I dont view this money as my money at all; instead, I look at it as an investment in my future self: it is my future selfs money. Im not allowed to touch it. Besides, it didnt happen overnight: Ive been investing for nearly a decade, slowly contributing a percentage of my income each month with unwavering conviction. Even when income has been low, Ive made sure to pay my(future)self first by investing in my retirement account and ensuring I have a Safety Net for emergencies. The following six tactics outline exactly how I save for the future and plan for retirement. (By the way, as Ryan and I discussed on our documentary, we certainly dont believe wealth directly correlates with a rich life; that doesnt mean having money is wrongâ"its notâ"it simply means money is not the primary driver for my life. But with the money I do earn, I want to invest responsibly.) Tactic 1. Safety Net. Before planning for retirement, it is best to plan for emergencies. Life happens, so we must create an initial Safety Net bucket containing $500â"$1000, invested conservatively to avoid downturns in the market. Warning: do not touch this money unless there is a true emergency (e.g., car repairs, home repairs, job loss, medical bills, and other real emergencies). In fact, this is why I keep my Safety Net in a Betterment bucket instead of in my checking or savings: by removing it from my regular bank account, Im less tempted to use that money unless its an actual emergency, plus I still have quick access to the money should I ever need it. Over time, once youâre out of debt, your Safety Net will grow to include several months of expenses (after years of saving, my Safety Net now has a years worth of expenses and I no longer contribute to that bucket). But for now, worry only about the first $500â"$1000 to start. Once youve built your initial Safety Net, yo u can begin piling cash into your Retirement Savings. Tactic 2. Retirement Savings (IRA). Of my four Betterment buckets, I use a Traditional IRA as my primary Retirement Savings bucket. As you can see from the screenshot below, the majority of my money is kept in a Traditional IRA, which is balanced aggressively toward stock-based index funds. As a Betterment customer, I can drill down to the individual index-fund level if I feel inclined to make adjustments to individual investments accordingly; although, in most cases, I allow Betterment to recommend the particular funds in which I should invest since they are the experts. Instead of a Traditional IRA, you can also opt for a Roth IRA (or both if youd like). The main difference between these two types of IRAs is that Traditional IRAs contributions are pre-tax (thereby lowing your annual taxable income), while Roth IRAs contributions are after-tax (which makes them tax-free upon retirement, provided certain criteria are met). Both IRA options are available through Betterment. I chose a Traditional IRA because I rolled-over a large 401(k) from my previous employer. (Note: well address 401(k)s, SEP-IRAs, and other similar employer-based retirement accounts in Tactic 5.) Tactic 3. Build Wealth. Because the U.S. government allows people to contribute only up to a certain amount to an IRA each year, I deposit any additional retirement savings into a Build Wealth bucket, which is set with the same aggressive-growth configuration as my Traditional IRA, although the money in this bucket is invested post-tax; thus, you need only establish a Build Wealth bucket if youve first maxed out your tax-advantaged IRA contributions. (Once you have a Betterment account, establishing new bucketsâ"Build Wealth, Safety Net, etc.â"is easy: just a few clicks and you have a new bucket.) Tactic 4. House Fund. One might say Im debt adverseâ"but that is an understatement. I hate debt! From my viewpoint, after experiencing crippling debt for over a decade, there is no such thing as good debt. Sure, some debt, such as a mortgage, is better than other debts, such as, say, a creepy payday lenderâ"but just because it is sometimes tolerable, debt is never a good thing. Hence, although Ive been a homeowner before (well, technically the bank owned the home and I paid the mortgage), I currently rent an apartment and save additional money into my House Fund bucket, which is adjusted more conservatively than my Retirement Savings and Build Wealth buckets because the House Fund bucket is ideally a shorter-term investment (fewer than five years). For some people, this bucket is a great way to amass a reasonable downpayment on a home (a 20% or greater downpayment allows the borrower to avoid pricey Private Mortgage Insurance). For me, however, this fund is there so when I decide t o finally purchase another house, I will do so in cash. As you can see, I have a long way to go, but I know it will be worth it. Tactic 5. Employer Contributions. If your employer offers an employer-matching, tax-qualified, defined-contribution pension account, such as a 401(k) (or 403(b) or 457(b) if you work for a nonprofit or government entity, respectively), then it is best to contribute to your 401(k) up to the employers matching amount. For example, if your employer matches your contributions up to 3%, then I encourage you to contribute 3% of your income because youre effectively doubling your investment immediately (if your employer doesnt match, however, then I would avoid an employer-based retirement account because there are better, more flexible options available). After the match, however, I recommend using an investment service like Betterment, or any of the others Ive mentioned, because they give considerably more flexibility, control, and guidance, and thus a greater return on your investment compared to most 401(k) plans, which are usually terribly limited. Personally, because my company is a s mall business (an LLC partnership with only a few employees), we established an SEP-IRA through Vanguardâ"our company went to Vanguard directly because Betterment allows only individual accounts (no business accounts). Much like a 401(k), SEP-IRAs are often adopted by small business owners to provide retirement benefits similar to a pension plan for the business owners and their employees. Tactic 6. Contributing to Others. Having personal wealth is a great ideaâ"but only if we are prepared to be responsible with our resources; otherwise, money can become a burden because money wont, as the cliche goes, buy us happiness. Sure, it will purchase myriad comforts, but comfort and happiness arent necessarily synonymous (in fact, comfort often keeps us from true happiness). Although The Minimalists had a breakthrough year last year (a bestselling book, a 100-city tour, etc.), Ryan and I decided to pay ourselves considerably less money than our business generated, opting instead to invest in other people and causes. We could do this contently only after ensuring our own financial house was in order, which enabled us to save more than 20% of our personal incomes while still contributing a considerable amountâ"well over 20% of our business revenueâ"to others. Giving is living: lets build wealth so we can give more and live more. 5 Investments to Avoid Whether you use my tactics or not, Id be remiss if I didnt warn you about the investments I avoid. Cash-value life insurance. Cash-value plans, such as whole-life or universal-life, are horrible investments. Life insurance should not be treated as an investmentâ"it must be treated as what it is: insurance! If you have dependents, then yes, you need life insurance (unless you are wealthy enough to self-insure), and your best bet is always term-life insurance. Additional reading: The Truth About Life Insurance. Individual stocks. Unless you are an expert day trader, individual stocks pose too much risk to the average investor. Even if your employer offers a special rate for their stock, I wouldnt invest my money into any single stock, not even reputable stocks like Apple or Google: its simply too high-risk for my taste. I want my money to grow over time, preferring to get rich slowly over get rich quick, the latter of which usually leads to a perilous outcome. Gold, silver, and precious metals. Like individual stocks, these metals are too fraught with risk when compared to index funds. Even worse, gold and silver are commoditiesâ"commodity prices are often manipulated by speculation rather than supply and demand. Additional reading: The Gold Market Is Losing Its Glitter. Annuities. Variable annuitiesâ"or any annuity for that matterâ"are generally not a good investment, especially since there are so many other great investment options available. More often than not, annuities are rife with fees and penalties and surrender periods, not to mention low rates of return. Yuck! Low-interest-yielding investments. If youre investing for greater than five years, then low-interest-yielding investments, such as CDs, savings accounts, individual bonds, and the like, are poor investments because the interest earned usually doesnt outpace inflation. These are great options, however, if youre saving for less than twelve months because they reduce your overall risk. Invest in Yourself: 3 Tips to Get Started By this point, you should have some financial clarity and a noggin full of good ideasâ"so dont leave the scene of a good idea without taking action! You need momentum if you want to keep going. Here are three next steps to get you on the right path todayâ"not one day, not next Fridayâ"but today. Investment account. Using Betterment or another online broker, set up an account today. Even if you dont have a single dollar to commit until next week or next month, thats okay. Establishing a free account is a proper first step. Start small and automate. Beginning with your next payday, automate regular deposits directly from your checking account. Start small: you wont notice a 2% pay cut. Every month or so, increase your contribution by 1%. Within a year, youll slowly ratchet up to nearly 15% of your pay, which is a great place to be. I employed this strategy in my life, slowly increasing my percentage 1% at a time, and I now save at least 20% of my income (often considerably more than 20% by making additional deposits whenever I run into additional money). Build your Safety Net first, and then start investing into your Retirement Savings bucket as soon as you have at least $500 in your Safety Net bucket. Public accountability. Once you have an investment account established, and have started contributing to it (no matter how little), share your newfound vigor with the world around you: tell a loved one, family member, or trusted coworker (someone who will congratulate you rather than judge you). If you like, you can share this article on social media or with coworkers to spark a discussion in your immediate circles. Discussing your financial objectives with other people helps you keep yourself on track. Conclusion: Best Financial Advice There is no single best way to plan for your financial future; rather, there is an entire landscape riddled with peaks and valleys you must navigate. It is my desire this how-to guide acts not as advice (which its not), but as a roadmap to help you on your journey toward a financially secure future. If you walk away from this essay with only one takeaway, I hope its this: start today. Dont let your crastination turn pro. Whether you use Betterment, Wealthfront, or your own personal broker to manage your money, the most important thing to do is get started. According to the ASPPA, the largest indicator of retiring with wealth is not your financial philosophy; its not your suit-n-tie, slick-talking broker; its not even your rate of returnâ"the primary indicator of having money when you retire is your savings rate. Thats right: putting money awayâ"starting todayâ"is the best route to financial freedom during retirement. While I am not a financial advisor, it is my aspiration the financial tools and strategies shared in this article will give you the push you need to get started and feel confident in your financial future. I wish you way more than luck. No matter how much opportunities the government provides to the minority groups, the effect of the war has greater negative impacts on these people. For instance, these minority groups are seldom caught up in the fighting, and are taken as hostage or act as a shield by the enemy. Since World War 2, America has fought in various wars, but the current combat is the War on Terror in the Middle East. Although this war has driven away militia groups and assisted in creating peaceful societies where minority groups have vast opportunities, the war has caused equal pain and many limited opportunities to these people. This thesis seeks to discuss the effect of war on minority people and groups during American wars. Second World WarWomen, children, and minority races often become casualties of war whenever there is war domestically, or internationally. During the Second World War, America attacked Japan with nuclear bombs at Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. The effect of these nuclear bombs is still felt up to date as people are born with physical and mental defects (Hixson, 2003). Americas nuclear bomb attack on Japan is one of the many American wars that triggered a lot of changes and pushed the world to adopt strict laws against the use of nuclear weapons (Hixson, 2003). Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings left many people dead, other maimed and nuclear bomb contaminated water, land and air. Seventy years since the end of World War 2, Hiroshima and Nagasaki cities are still facing a lot of health and economic problems. Thus, Americas wars have limited the opportunities of minority groups more than it has benefited these people (Hixson, 2003) . One of outcome and the American experience in this war was the formation of United Nations Non-proliferation of nuclear weapons NPT (UN.org, 1995). America changed the approach of its war tactics and pushed for other nations under United Nations to cease the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction. Nuclear weapons effect on Japan shows how these weapons can be fatal especially in the wrong hands such as terrorists. For instance, after 70 years, Japanese in Hiroshima and Nagasaki communities are still experiencing health issues from the radiation in the environments, and this is a negative effect of the American war. Following these adverse effects of nuclear war, America is often in the forefront in the fight against the manufacture of nuclear weapons in Iraq, Iran, and North Korea (Hixson, 2003). From the Second World War 2, America has refrained from using its nuclear power to protect minority groups who are affected severely during wars. For example, if America was to wa ge war with a nuclear power nation like Russia, the aftermath can be disastrous. It can result in social, political and economic problems, and most disadvantaged groups may suffer more. The art of using nuclear bombs on Japan may have terminated the war through the collapse of Japanese empire control in Asia. However, the effect of Americas nuclear bomb still haunts these communities even in the 21st century since Nuclear weapons have high radiation on vegetations, and water (Hixson, 2003). The main reason American went into Second World War was to defeat Axis forces; Japan, Germany, and Italy to ensure that all nations were free. The Axis nations wanted to ruin the sovereignty of other democratic nations, and American led the Allied power to end this political, social, and economic injustices. The war ended in favor of the Allied forces and the birth of America and Russia as world super power. America has ever since pushed for world governments to uphold the sovereignty of others and respect political, social, and economic structures of other independent nations (Hixson, 2003). Through United Nations forces, America ensures that women, children, and other disadvantaged people are protected. America involvement in the Second World War has changed a lot of things such as American supremacy in the world. Today, America and United Nations forces often get involved in civil wars to restore order and protect minority groups, as well as, to enhance political and economic balances. However, despite the noble actions, American military have in many cases been accused of getting into war for malicious intention. War on Terror in the Middle East is often termed as a cover story. Political scientists argue that the main reason for going to this war is in the interest of Middle Easts oil deposits (Hixson, 2003). Consequently, America acts as the guardian of the world keeping law and order on world governments. For example, America took part in the Gulf War when Iraq invaded Kuwait. The rationale for Americas participation n the 1990-1991 war was to protect the people of Kuwait and avoid a bloody war. Hence, some aspects of American involvement in world wars are the same since America seeks to restore order and protect minority groups at all cost. However, there are many undesired results that emanate from these wars since most minority groups are adversely affected during wars. For instance, women, child and other minority groups die, starve and others suffer from severe mental problems due to war, and violence exposure. America have been involved in other wars since world war 2, but the military forces have refrained from using nuclear bombs in honor of the UN Non-proliferation of nuclear weapons Treat (UN.org. 1995). In the recent War on Terror in the Middle East, America spearheaded the hunt for Osama bin Laden and other extremists who are willing to use weapons to destroy America. Middle East invasion have been highly condemned in Ameri ca and has led to the withdrawal of American forces. Conversely, this war has had an impact on the politics, economy and the social life aspect in both nations. More so, American wars have become limited since the military has a limited purpose to accomplish in their war. For instance, the during the Iraq war, one of the limited purpose was to overthrow Saddam Hussein because America viewed him as a threat. Most of America wars have changed to serve political and economic plans. The rival nations or governments are neutralized by smaller units who collaborate with allies like in the Libyan war. NATO forces worked together to defeat and overthrow the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 (Toaldo, 2013). One thing is certain in all American wars internationally, America is vocal when it comes to fighting injustices in the world. However, the approach America take differs from one war to the other. In the Cold War, America did not get involved but financed its allies to fight against Russian communists allies.Cold WarThis war erupted after the end of Second World War as America and Russia fought silently for world supremacy. Though this war did not entail the use of direct physical force, both sides employed a new approach of war psychology. This conflict has changed how American approaches wars without necessary engaging in military combat. For instance, America assisted ally nations in fighting against Russias ally nations. The outcome of the Cold War had mixed outcomes since there is no victor or loser. Rather, these fighting affected the lives of many minority groups, which the America fought to defend. Although Cold War ended with America being the only superpower, the lives of many people were ruined (Dudziak, 2000).Thus, war has had a negative effect on minority groups because these people suffer more than they gain from the war. The best experience from the Cold War is that American government realized that for America democracy to thrive, an y sought of discrimination had to end. The passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 ushered in a new era where all minority groups had equal rights and freedom irrespective their race, gender, religion, or language. The Cold War experience helped American understand more about their democratic values, and how to uphold them by ending violence and segregation on minority people (Dudziak, 2000).However, the Cold War battles between America and Russia had a setback on American culture, and this affected minority groups. For instance, many Hollywood producers began producing anticommunist movies. These movies affected the lives of many communist refugees who had fled to America after the end of Second World War and Cold War. These minority peoples lives were torn apart by American patriots. Many lives were ruined as many minority people were blacklisted, others were fired, and their civil rights were greatly violated as a result of Cold War cultural battles (Dudziak, 2000).The prima ry attitude that was reflected in this war was the need to uphold American civil rights. Democracy cannot be achieved if minority groups are segregated, and treated as unequal from white- elite groups. Today, America is one of the nations that uphold civil rights, and this social value of the cultural difference from Cold War promoted civil liberties. From the time of Cold War, America has advocated for minority rights and giving these people more opportunities in response to the Constitution. America government ensures that the rights of minority people are observed though the aspect of casualties of war cannot be avoided when there is the war.Civil right movement -a silent war Americas 1960s civil right violations affected many minority groups such as women, children, and Africa Americans. However, society attempts to lock those instincts away by casting a burden called rules upon them. In the allegorical text, Lord of the Flies, William Golding depicts a group of boys, stranded on a tropical island, free of civilization. Here he paints an image of what humans really are without the burdens of society. In Goldingââ¬â¢s psychological allegory The Lord of the Flies, Jack embodies the ID, someone who acts based on his/her own basic wants and needs, for the sake of establishing his theme: Humans are, no matter the circumstance, evil, and man tries make humans ideal and good through the making of rules and laws. From beginning to end, Goldingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the later stages of the novel, when Jack and Ralph argue, Ralph tries to assert the power and authority that the conch, the symbol of law and order holds, in order to speak, however, Jack states, ââ¬Å"You havent got it with you, ââ¬Å" said Jack, sneering. ââ¬Å"You left it behind. See, clever? And the conch doesnââ¬â¢t count on this end if the islandââ¬ââ⬠(Golding 150). Jackââ¬â¢s disregard for civilization can be shown when Ralph attempts to speak by mentioning the conch, the symbol for law and order, and sneers. The fact that he sneers represents how savage Jack has truly become. When Jack is first introduced he encouraged rules:ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll have rules!â⬠he cried excitedly. (Golding 33). He makes fun of the conch the one thing all of the boys on the island agreed, subconsciously, to be the only remnant of society and thus is the reason they listened to Ralph at all: ââ¬Å" Him with th e shell. Ralph! Ralph! Let him be chief with the trumpet-thing.â⬠(Golding 22). In addition to Jackââ¬â¢s complete negligence of the conch, he even promotes and praises savagery. By stating that the conch only counts on one part of the island and not on another insinuates the idea that whatever happens on that side of the island is not governed by law and order but by instinct, lust to kill, and primitive desires. Perhaps the hottest topic in all of philosophy concerns the existence of God. Thus the questionââ¬âââ¬Å"Does God exist? â⬠Our answer to this question affects how we view the world, how we behave, and what we expect for the future. If God exists, then we are probably accountable to this God. The universe may have meaning and purpose. Plus, our own existence may not cease at physical death. If God does not exist, however, then we are probably here by chance and are not accountable to some transcendent being. This life may be all we have, so live your life however you see fit and enjoy it. Traditionally, there have been four major arguments for Godââ¬â¢s existence: (1) the cosmological argument; (2) the teleological argument; (3) the ontological argument; and (4) the moral law argument. Below are explanations of each of the arguments and the common responses to them. 1. Cosmological Argument The term ââ¬Å"cosmologicalâ⬠comes from the Greek word ââ¬Å"kosmosâ⬠which means ââ¬Å"world. â⬠The cosmological argument for Godââ¬â¢s existence goes like this: The world could not exist on its own so there must have been a first cause that brought it into being. This first cause is God. Or put another way, the universe could not just exist on its ownââ¬âsomeone or something must have made it. This cause of the universe is God. Three criticisms of the cosmological argument have been offered. First, some say matter is eternal and is not in need of a ââ¬Å"first cause. â⬠Second, some say ââ¬Å"If everything needs a cause, what caused God? â⬠Third, some say that even if it is true that some being caused our universe to exist, this does not prove the existence of the Christian God. All it shows is that there is some powerful being that created the universe, but this does not necessarily mean that this creator was the God of the Bible. 2. Teleological Argument The teleological argument is also known as ââ¬Å"the argument from designâ⬠(The Greek word ââ¬Å"telosâ⬠means ââ¬Å"purposeâ⬠or ââ¬Å"design. â⬠). The argument goes like this: The universe evidences great complexity or design; thus, it must have been designed by a great Designer or God. The argument from design can be likened to a watch. A watch is obviously made by a watchmaker. The world, which is much more complex than a watch, must also have been designed by a great Designer or Divine Watchmaker (God). In sum, the teleological argument asserts that the universe evidences too much complexity to be the product of random chance. We know that the celestial bodies move with perfect accuracy in their orbits. Our bodies, too, are incredibly complex. According to the teleological argument, thereââ¬â¢s just no way all this complexity could ââ¬Å"just happen. â⬠God must have created it all. There have been three responses to the teleological argument. First, some say the teleological argument is guilty of a ââ¬Å"weak analogyâ⬠because it assumes a significant resemblance between natural objects (ex. rocks, trees) and objects we know have been designed (ex. watches, skyscrapers). Thus, comparing natural objects with objects we know have been created by humans is like comparing apples and oranges. The analogy just doesnââ¬â¢t work. Second, some say that the theories of the big bang and evolution better explain the complexity in the universe. Third, some say that even if the teleological argument is true, it does not prove the existence of the Christian God. 3. Ontological Argument The third argument for Godââ¬â¢s existence is the ontological argument. This argument is unlike the cosmological and teleological arguments in that it does not argue from evidence in the natural world. Thus, it is not a ââ¬Å"cause and effectâ⬠argument. The ontological argument can be stated in this way: ââ¬Å"God is the greatest being imaginable. One of the aspects of perfection or greatness is existence. Thus, God exists. â⬠Or put another wayââ¬âââ¬Å"The fact that God can be conceived means that he must exist. â⬠This argument for Godââ¬â¢s existence was developed by the twelfth century theologian and philosopher, Anselm. It is based on Anselmââ¬â¢s declaration that God is ââ¬Å"that which nothing greater can be conceived. â⬠The ontological argument has been very controversial. Even many who believe in Godââ¬â¢s existence question its validity. A contemporary of Anselm named Guanilo responded to Anselm. Guanilo said that one could imagine a perfect island but that did not mean a perfect island exists. Others have said you can imagine a unicorn but that does not mean unicorns exist. Thus, many challenge the idea that the idea of God must mean that God exists. 4. Moral Law Argument Another argument for the existence of God is the moral law argument. It goes like this: Without God morality would be impossible. There must be a Lawgiver (God) who originates and stands by moral law. A universal moral law cannot exist accidentally. There must be a basis behind itââ¬âGod. According to this view, every person is born with an inherent understanding of right and wrong. Everyone, for instance, understands that killing an innocent person is wrong. Everyone understands that helping a drowning person is right. Where did this internal understanding of right and wrong come from? According to adherents of the moral law argument, this understanding comes from God. He put it into the hearts of every person. There have been two responses to the moral law argument. First, some deny that there are universal truths. Many today believe that truth is subjective and relative. Societies and individuals determine what is true for them, but there is no God that does this. Second, some say that the presence of evil in the world argues against a Moral Lawgiver. If God is all-powerful and all-good, how can evil exist in the world? The arguments and counterarguments for Godââ¬â¢s existence remain controversial. The cosmological, teleological, and moral law arguments remain popular with Christian apologists today. The ontological argument is not as well received although some today still asserts its validity. It should be noted that most Christian theologians and philosophers believe that God never intended for his existence to be something that could be proven with 100% certainty. They point out that faith is an important component in understanding God and his existence. Argumentsà for and against theà existence of Godà have been proposed by philosophers, theologians, scientists, and others for thousands of years. Inphilosophicalà terms, arguments for and against the existence ofà Godà involve primarily the sub-disciplines ofà epistemologyà (theory of knowledge) andontologyà (nature of god) and also theà theory of value, since concepts of perfection are connected to notions of God. The debate concerning the existence of God is one of the oldest and most discussed debates inà human history. A wide variety of arguments exist which can be categorized asmetaphysical,à logical,à empirical, orà subjective. The existence of God is subject to lively debate in philosophy,[1]à theà philosophy of religion, andà popular culture. The Western tradition of the existence of God began withà Platoà andà Aristotle, who made arguments for Godââ¬â¢s existence that would now be categorized asà cosmological arguments. Later,à Epicurusà formulated theà problem of evil: if God isà omnipotent,à omniscientà andà omnibenevolent, why does evil exist? The field ofà theodicyà arose from attempts to answer this question. Other thoughts about the existence of God have been proposed byà St. Anselm, who formulated the firstà ontological argument;à Ibn Rushd (Averroes)à andà Aquinas, who presented their own versions of the cosmological argument (thekalamà argumentà and theà first way), respectively;à Descartes, who said that the existence of a benevolent God wasà logically necessaryà for the evidence of the senses to be meaningful; andà Immanuel Kant, who argued that the existence of God can be deduced from the existence ofà good. Thinkers who have provided arguments against the existence of God includeà David Hume, Kant,à Nietzscheà andà Bertrand Russell. In modern culture, the question of Godââ¬â¢s existence has been discussed by philosophers and scientists such asà Stephen Hawking,à Richard Dawkins,à Daniel Dennett,à Richard Swinburne,William Lane Craig, andà Alvin Plantinga. Atheists maintain that arguments for the existence of God show insufficient reason to believe. Certainà theistsà acknowledge that belief in the existence of God may not be amenable to demonstration or refutation, but rests onà faithà alone, a position calledà fideism. Theà Catholic Churchà maintains that knowledge of the existence of God is available in the ââ¬Å"natural light of human reasonâ⬠alone. [2]à Other religions, such asà Buddhism, do not concern themselves the existence of gods at all. Does God Exist? byà Tawa Anderson Is there a God? 1à How can you beà sureà that God exists? Can youà proveà to me that God is real? Does the existence (or lack thereof) of God make any significant difference? Was Nietzsche right in declaring: ââ¬Å"God is dead! â⬠? These questions strike at the very heart of human existence, and cry out for our personal attention and deliberation. Furthermore, these questions must be answered before we can inquire into the truth of Christianity. After all, if there is no God, then Jesus certainly isnââ¬â¢t God in the flesh! If there is no God, there is no Christian faith worth considering. In this brief essay, I will share three persuasive clues (traditionally called arguments or proofs) that point to the existence of God. This is not an apologetic forà Christianity, but rather for basicà theismà ââ¬â an argument that God exists, not an argument that theà Christianà God is real. God Exists God must exist because something must have caused the first moment in time and that something is God. This is summarized by, Saintà Thomas Aquinasà in his theory of cause. He presented five arguments for the existence of god in his masterwork theà Summa Theologiae. In the argument about casualty he stated the following premises: 1. Theà natural worldà includes events that occur. 2. In thenatural world, every event has a cause, and no event causes itself. 3. In theà natural world, causes must precede their effects. 4. In theà natural world, there are no infinite cause/effect chains. 5. Hence there is anà entity outsideà of nature (a supernatural being), which causes the first event that occurs in the world. In ourà finite worldà of existence, an event cannot cause itself, and if there is no first cause, there would not be any effects. So, God is the first cause. God must exist since all his premises are all in support of his conclusion that the first cause is God. An atheist is likely to say that the Big Bang was the first cause, but Aquinasââ¬â¢s premises and conclusion will refute this theory, as we will view later. I agree with this theory of cause, because I believe that our existence could How to cite Do God Exist ?, Essay examples withlockkahfang1987http://www.blogger.com/profile/00732669377088453714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4192152194153994705.post-20445622030172323582020-05-05T22:28:00.001-07:002020-05-05T22:28:16.319-07:00How Seamus Heaney presents childhood in Death of a naturalist and Mid term break Essay Example For Students How Seamus Heaney presents childhood in Death of a naturalist and Mid term break Essay The poet Seamus Heaney is describing to incidents from childhood. Mid term break depicts the sombre affair of a childs death. Death of a naturalist on the other hand tells us of a happy event. Although the two poems are written by Seamus Heaney they are not alike, death of a naturalist for example is about a boy and his interest in nature at school. Mid term break tells us about a young boy and his brother dying in his family. The narrators of both poems are young boys who are both describing an incident from the past. The narrator of death of a naturalist is describing a nature lesson at school and is linking nature to growing up e. g. describing the tadpoles turning into frogs. Mid term break is totally the opposite the narrator is a young lad from a big family and his brother has died he describes his feelings and the hardship he and his family are going through. At the beginning of Death of a Naturalist the mood starts quite low and down putting it uses word such as festered, heavy headed, rotten, sweltered and punishing. The poem opens with an evocation of a summer landscape which has the immediacy of an actual childhood experience. There is also a sense of exploration in in the heart/Of the townland; which is consistent with the idea of learning and exploration inevitably leading to discovery and the troubled awareness of experience. It gives a bad image of childhood because you could relate festered in my heart, heavy headed, daily it sweltered in the sun all to humans all too us. These all make out that childhood is bad and is not a good atmosphere for us growing up. The atmosphere in the poem Mid Term Break is of an unease and discomfort. It is as if the poet is in shock he sees clearly the things around him and almost as if sleepwalking notes them in a daze but cannot make sense of anything. He notices the baby too young to comprehend what is happening he is cooing happily and rocking in its pram. The content sounds of the baby a new life acts as a jolting counterpoint to the grief-stricken silence in the room. Sitting the in the college sick bay counting bells kneeling classes too a close. One important word in the opening paragraph is kneeling because it means bringing classes to a close. kneeling also evokes remembrances of funerals linking this to the dark cold room of the sick bay. There are other sounds that help make mid term Break affective for example metaphor, onomatopoeia, alliteration and assonance. Death of a Naturalist is concerned with growing up and loss of innocence. The poet vividly describes a childhood experience that precipitates a change in the boy from the receptive and protected innocence of childhood to the fear and uncertainty of adolescence. Heaney organises his poem in two sections, corresponding to the change in the boy. By showing that this change is linked with education and learning, Heaney is concerned with the inevitability of the progression from innocence to experience, concerned with the transformation from the unquestioning child to the reflective adult. The poem recreates and examines the moment of the childs confrontation with the fact that life is not what it seems. The experience transforms the boys perception of the world. No longer is it a place for unquestioning sensuous delight. It is a dynamic world of uncertainty. this is an extract from another descriptive piece of writing by andrew mayers he help show to show growing up and a loss of innocense. The success of the poem derives from the effective way Heaney builds up a totally convincing account of a childhood experience that deals with the excitement, pain and confusion of growing up. .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba , .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba .postImageUrl , .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba , .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba:hover , .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba:visited , .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba:active { border:0!important; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba:active , .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ucbf38d4730eaf9872530fc594c49dbba:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Victorian Poetry C EssayThere are many mataphors in both poems there is one extended methphor in death of a naturalist which is simpely sensational it help give us an image of what the poem is about. The major extended methphor is about growing up and leaving behind the innocence of childhood. Although there is no similar extended methphor in Mid Term Break There is a high overall imperession of childhood. The boy does not know how to respond to the men and does not understand properly what is going on. The silence in the poem is broken again in the second line when whispers start to happen. Also, this shows the men do not know how to respond to the boy and probably paused to find the best way of saying it to the boy: Whispers informed strangers I was the eldest Always at school, as my mother held my hand This shows how the silence is broken as people inform strangers that the poet is the eldest. This indicates that he is or was not the only child and maybe the person who died was his brother or sister. It shows he does not like to be the oldest as he has a lot of responsibility. What the poet is going through, as a boy is what most people go through as an adult. It shows he is making the transition from being a boy into an adult man. Also it shows that he goes to boarding school as he stays away at school. The significance of the poppy bruise snowdrops and a candle flame are that take the flame on the candle that signifies new life and that the boy or girl is happy and is in a peaceful place. The narrator saves the information about a boy till the end because it creates suspense and makes you want to reed on to find out what is going to happen. Also it makes the poem look better and it gives the reader more time to think about the ending. The ending of death of a naturalist is a happy and sad ending it is very describing of the frogs and the atmosphere around himself he also uses wonderful metaphors such as slime kings croaking and I dipped my hand the spawn would clutch it. Mid term break however ends miserable it describes the brother or sister that has died and how it happened the end I really were you find out what has really happened to the boy/girl. The mood is quite low and makes you sad. Death of a Naturalist ends happy though with you really finding out that everything is about childhood and growing up The poem recreates and examines the moment of the childs confrontation with the fact that life is not what it seems. The experience transforms the boys perception of the world. No longer is it a place for unquestioning sensuous delight. It is a dynamic world of uncertainty. The success of the poem derives from the effective way Heaney builds up a totally convincing account of a childhood experience that deals with the excitement, pain and confusion of growing up. The final line stands out on its own. Almost every word is emphasized so that the reader must take in the lines message and the shock and deep grief that the family must have felt. There is an element of shock for the reader reading it for the first time also, when they discover who has died and that he was a mere four years old. This quote/extract is from Andrew Mayers account of Seamus Heaney he hive a strong paragraph on the moment of the childs confrontation. Mid term break is an incredibly sad poem. The mood is set almost immediately in the second line: Counting bells knelling classes to a close. .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd , .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd .postImageUrl , .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd , .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd:hover , .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd:visited , .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd:active { border:0!important; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd:active , .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue256af2dfe3ab6570458e482b9dce3cd:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Listeners - Atmosphere EssayNotice how Heaney uses assonance and alliteration to emphasize the funereal sound of the bells and the feeling of time dragging. I love both of these two poems I think personally that mid term break I better as it offers a lot more in the way of emotion and feelings I love the use of symbolism in the poem. The poppy bruise standing for violent and untimely death just ties in so well. love this poem, as it echoes the different stages of grief. From the disbelief of it all, to when it finally sets in that his baby brother has died. I like the way Heaney has used the imagery of his brother simply being asleep. As he finds it hard to understand that his brother, a young boy with his whole life ahead of him, has been hit by a car and killed. Death of a naturalist is also an excelent piece of poetry too as Death of a Naturalist is concerned with growing up and loss of innocence. The poet vividly describes a childhood experience that precipitates a change in the boy from the receptive and protected innocence of childhood to the fear and uncertainty of adolescence. I could realte mid term break because my grandad was killed by a car a few years ago. withlockkahfang1987http://www.blogger.com/profile/00732669377088453714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4192152194153994705.post-72344731330194497422020-05-05T12:16:00.001-07:002020-05-05T12:16:02.881-07:00Black Panther Party Research Essay Research Paper free essay sample Black Panther Party Research Essay, Research Paper Guns, Social Welfare, and Revolution: The Black Panther Party In late September of 1966, at a little poorness centre in North Oakland, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale began to outline the Ten-Point Platform and Program, therefore making the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. From this creative activity rose a complex patriot organisation with chapters throughout the United States that sought to educate the people politically, and from that instruction give the people the desire to ramp a revolution in order to hold their demands and political docket fulfilled. The Black Panther Party was the prototype of the patriot option throughout the late sixties and 70s, and they had the demand to make alteration within what they believed to be the racist power construction of the United States. The Black Panther Party was able to form the people, and take portion in actions that would assist to implement societal alteration. The Panthers created timeserving plans for the Black young person in order to assist construct up the community. In add-on, the Panthers besides staged many presentations and protests that non merely brought together the Black community, but besides benefited the cause of equal rights. Despite all of the good facets that the Black Panther Party brought to the Black community and civil rights motion ( or possibly because of these facets ) , the F.B.I. and United States authorities believed the Panthers to be one of the United States greatest internal jobs. In hindsight, it becomes obvious that the US power construction was flawed in their apprehension of the Black Panther Party and their ends. Yet, in malice of this misinterpretation, the Black Panther Party was able to somewhat forestall the authorities s flawed manner of analyzing political groups to predominate into the hereafter by agencies of the Panther s bequest. The Black Panther Party was created on the belief that the Unite d States was structurally racist, and that this racism was trying to genocide the Black race. The Black Panther Party believed that to antagonize this racism, they needed to destruct the power construction, and replace it with a merely system of authorities. Racism was non merely some self-conceived impression taken up among the members of the Black Panther Party. Racism had been happening in America by agencies of the slave trade even before the United States was called the United States. With the terminal of bondage, it was expected that Blacks would be able to incorporate into the remainder of American society and be provided with the warrants of all work forces populating in the United States as determined by the Constitution. However, it was non expected that the white community would be as opposed to this alteration as they were. The ultimate signifier of racism was portrayed in the White supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan. This group terrorized Black people throughout the South, every bit good as any sympathisers of the Black battle. In 1930 Dr. Arthur Raper was commissioned to bring forth a study on lynching, at the clip a much excessively frequent pattern in the South. He discovered that there were 3,724 people reported lynches in the United States from 1889 through to 1930. Over four-fifths of the peopled that were lynched were Negroes, and less than one-sixth of whom were accused of colza. Practically all of the lynchers were Whites. Of the 10s of 1000s of lynchers and looker-ons, merely 49 were indicted and merely 4 have been sentenced. In 1935 President Franklin D. Roosevelt refused to back up an anti-lynching measure because he argued that the white electors in the South would neer forgive him and decline to vote for him at the following election. The tolerance that the constabulary and the authorities had for lynching showed the disregard of the President and Congress in doing appropriate statute law and implementing that statute law to halt the pattern of lynching. As the laden began to contend back against the oppressors throughout the Civil Rights motion, the pattern of lynching began to slowly lessening, nevertheless, the force against Blacks persisted. Thirty old ages after Dr. Raper s study on lynches, rabble force and constabulary ferociousness against Blacks still occurred on a regular basis in the United States ; the authorities was still non looking out for Black Americans. In 1966, police ferociousness was a job in many countries of the state. The freshly formed Black Panther Party for Self Defense sent a strong message in turn toing this job: they wanted constabularies ferociousness to halt, and to make this they proposed the maneuver of self-defence. The thought of self-defense, along with the group s chauvinistic positions is portrayed in the Black Panther Party s ten-point plan. The Ten-Point Program was based on simplenesss that any citizen of the United States would want. Composed by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, the Ten-Point Program became a cardinal constituent in the organisation of the group. The plan stresses freedom for those who were being oppressed, and an terminal to the inhibitory authorities. The Program besides strongly advocated the usage of guns for self-defence and stressed the 2nd Amendment. With 1000s of transcripts of the Ten-Point Program in manus, Newton, Seale, and Bobby Hutton went throughout the Black community jointing the Program to the people, garnering support. The three so went on to put up the 1st official central office of the Black Panther Party in North Oakland. After the creative activity of this office in Northern Oakland, involvement in the Black Panther Party began to increase throughout Oakland ; subsequently this involvement spread on a national degree, with chapters in 48 provinces, and a few international chapters every bit good. The Black Panther Party was in all facets of the term, a nationalist group. The Panthers felt that the authorities was incapable of supplying a merely authorities for all work forces, peculiarly Black work forces, and that the authorities should be replaced with a system that could see justness. The Black Panther Party s Ten-Point Program accurately inside informations this end. The Ten-Point Program was a basic desire for Black America to acquire what White America was granted without inquiry, and what Black America had been deprived of. The Programs demands were simple: freedom to find the fate of Black communities, full employment, an terminal to development of Black communities by Capitalists, nice lodging, wellness attention, an terminal to patrol ferociousness, an terminal to war, and tests for Blacks with a Black jury as opposed to an all White jury. To be granted these demands, the Ten-Point Program provinces, it is their [ the Black community s ] right, it is their responsib ility, to throw off such authorities, and to supply new guards for their future security. The Ten-Point Program and Platform boldly called for an overthrow of the authorities, and encouraged people to take up weaponries to protect themselves against these fascist constabulary forces. The Panther s were recommending radical alteration, and the people were listening. One of the grounds that the Black Panther Party was able to garner and keep so much support throughout the Black community was because they were genuinely concerned with breaking the community. Before the sta rt of the party, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale were both involved in the North Oakland Neighborhood Anti-Poverty Center. At this centre Newton was a community organiser, while Seale was the chief of a young person work undertaking. This experience in working with the community doubtless helps to explicate why most of the societal plans that the Black Panther Party developed were so successful. The plans created by the Black Panther Party, which were operated by Party members, were referred to as SPR or survival pending revolution. The first such plan was the Free Breakfast for Children Program. At its tallness, the plan was a immense success, feeding 200,000 kids daily. The plan started in a Catholic church in the Fillmore territory of San Francisco, so spread to every major metropolis in America where there was a Party chapter. Other societal services that the Black Panther Party began to supply were free wellness clinics, food market giveaways, the fabrication and distribution of fre e places, school and instruction plans, senior conveyance and service plans, free bussing to prisons and prisoner support plans, and legal assistance plans, among many others. For the most portion, these plans were all successful in supplying Blacks and other minorities with much needed societal services. Some plans were so successful, such as the Free Breakfast for Children Program, that the authorities was forced to follow similar plans throughout the state. Peoples within Black and White Communities began to recognize that the Black Panther Party was more than a clump of Black work forces with guns ; people began to recognize that the Black Panther Party could supply some replies to jobs within the community. Despite being criticized by the FBI as transporting out a Communist docket with SPR, the Black Panther Party was able to set together over 35 societal plans for the improvement of the community. Not merely was the Black Panther Party was able to supply many societal benefits for the community ; the Black Panther Party was besides highly active in the Black political battle and release motion. The Panther s called for an terminal to subjugation and offered revolution as an option. They were able to politically educate and form immature Blacks who were willing to contend for the party. In Oakland, the Black Panther Party invariably patrolled the hogs with guns in an effort to forestall constabulary ferociousness. The Panthers educated themselves on every gun jurisprudence on the books and were able to avoid being arrested in most instances ; nevertheless, in some cases, members of the Black Panther Party were arrested merely for the fact that they were Black work forces with guns. A polar event for the Black Panther Party occurred due to patrol over exerting their power and hassling Huey P. Newton and Bobby Hutton because they had guns. The result of Newton and Hutton s confro ntation with the constabulary left Hutton and a police officer dead, and landed Newton behind bars for manslaughter. The resulting Free Huey motion brought together the community every bit much as any other action that the Black Panthers took portion in. Young Whites, angry at America over the Vietnam War, joined immature urban Blacks in mass meetings to intone in unison: Free Huey! The laden combat back against his oppressors was a message that any adult male, Black or White, could appreciate. The will of the people in their battle to liberate Huey was able to assist Huey Newton acquire out of gaol three old ages after his apprehension, acquitted of all charges. Another case when the Black Panther s used their power to act upon political relations was when a group of Black Panthers, led by Bobby Seale, stormed into the California State Legislature to protest a gun-control measure. The group delivered their message to the legislative assembly, and was subsequently arrested in path b ack to Oakland. All of the members arrested spent a short clip in gaol for upseting the peace, but were neer convicted of any offense. The fact of the affair was that the Black Panther Party made their political voice heard. Despite being arrested and imprisoned, the message that the Panther s were seeking to acquire across was heard, and there was no manner that the White power construction could halt it. With the formation of the Black Panther Party and their chauvinistic positions within Ten-Point Program and Platform, the Black Panther Party had an enemy. The group that opposed the Black Panther Party the most was the F.B.I. The F.B.I. Director, J. Edgar Hoover, called the Black Panther Party the greatest menace to the internal security of the U.S. The F.B.I. viewed the formation of societal plans by the Black Panther Party as forcing a Communist docket. Alternatively of dissecting the message that the Black Panther Party was seeking to acquire across, the power construction could merely see Black work forces with guns. The F.B.I. made it a end to stop the organisation of the Black Panther Party in 1969. The most utile arm that the F.B.I. had in their armory to destruct the Black Panther Party was a counterintelligence plan competently name COINTELPRO. Through the usage of this plan the F.B.I. was able to destruct the party by agencies of its field offices and the aid of local cons tabulary. These bureaus frequently were involved in covert activities that involved slaying and mayhem. With the slayings and apprehensions of much of the hierarchy of the Black Panther organisation, the party began to easy demise throughout the seventies. A brief resurgence occurred in 1977 when Huey Newton returned to Oakland after several old ages of expatriate, but internal struggle within the party and continued F.B.I. activities brought the Party to an about nonexistent province by the 1980s. The Black Panther Party was founded on the thought that the power construction of the United States was racialist, and that it needed to be replaced. In trying to accomplish this end of revolution, the Panthers were able to construct up the community to convey people together, and allow their voice be heard. Many of the societal plans that the Panthers implemented have survived into the present twenty-four hours. Despite the best attempts of the F.B.I. to destruct the Jaguars and their ideals, the Panthers bequest of Black political power and community service will populate on forever. There are many theories as to why the witch trials came about, the most popular of which is the girls' suppressed childhoods. However, there were other factors as well, such as Abigail Williams' affair with John Proctor, the secret grudges that neighbors held against each other, and the physical and economic differences between the citizens of Salem Village. From a historical viewpoint, it is known that young girls in colonial Massachusetts were given little or no freedom to act like children. They were expected to walk straight, arms by their sides, eyes slightly downcast, and their mouths were to be shut unless otherwise asked to speak. It is not surprising that the girls would find this type of lifestyle very constricting. To rebel against it, they played pranks, such as dancing in the woods, listening to slaves' magic stories and pretending that other villagers were bewitching them. The Crucible starts after the girls in the village have been caught dancing in the woods. As one of them falls sick, rumors start to fly that there is witchcraft going on in the woods, and that the sick girl is bewitched. Once the girls talk to each other, they become more and more frightened of being accused as witches, so Abigail starts accusing others of practicing witchcraft. The other girls all join in so that the blame will not be placed on them. In The Crucible, Abigail starts the accusations by saying, "I go back to Jesus; I kiss his hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!" Another girl, Betty, continues the cry with, "I saw George Jacobs with the Devil! I saw Goody Howe with the Devil!" From here on, the accusations grow and grow until the jails overflow with accused witches. It must have given them an incredible sense of power when the whole town of Salem listened to their words and believed each and every accusation. After all, children were to be seen and not heard in Puritan society, and the newfound attention was probably overwhelming. In Act Three of The Crucible, the girls were called before the judges to defend themselves against the claims that they were only acting. To prove their innocence, Abigail led the other girls in a chilling scene. Abby acted as if Mary Warren sent her spirit up to the rafters and began to talk to the spirit. "Oh Mary, this is a black art to change your shape. No, I cannot, I cannot stop my mouth; it's God's work I do." The other girls all stared at the rafters in horror and began to repeat everything they heard. Finally, the girls' hysterics caused Mary Warren to accuse John Proctor of witchcraft. Once the scam started, it was too late to stop, and the snowballing effect of wild accusations soon resulted in the hanging of many innocents. After the wave of accusations began, grudges began to surface in the community. Small slights were made out to be witchcraft, and bad business deals were blamed on witchery. Two characters in The Crucible, Giles Corey and Thomas Putnam, argue early on about a plot of land. Corey claims that he bought it from Goody Nurse but Putnam says he owns it, and Goody Nurse had no right to sell it. Later, when Putnam's daughter accuses George Jacobs of witchery, Corey claims that Putnam only wants Jacobs' land. Giles says, "If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property - that's law! And there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbors for their land!" Others also had hidden motives for accusing their neighbors. Once the accusations began, everyone had a reason to accuse someone else which is why the hangings got so out of hand. The wave of accusations can be likened to mass hysteria, in which the people involved are so caught up that they start having delusions of neighbors out to do them harm. Girding himself for the revealing readings from his published Notebooks, adapted by Theater Emory, the prodigious South African playwright cracked to one of his hosts, I feel as though you should carry me onto the stage in an open casket. As it turned out, no one was more alive to the words than their author. Listening, with head lowered and eyes closed, to the 1960s entries about his dying father (the unseen, pain-wracked figure that haunts his diaries, as well as the plays Hello and Goodbye and Master Haroldand the Boys), Fugard wept. When the lights came up, he mingled for a while with the audience, remembering names with the kindly care most famous artists can only manage for wealthy backers. The reading and reception set the tone for an often joyous and occasionally confrontational encounter between the artist and the city: five productions at three theatres, as well as an array of debate-sparking forums during his three-week resi dency. Fugard was hardly the Great Author on a Delta Stopover collecting a life-achievement award; he came as a working artist, and needed every ounce of energy enhanced by his daily five-mile jogs (whose pace frustrated a rollerblade-mounted cameraman from CBS Sunday Morning) around Piedmont Park. We call the festival a partynot a retrospectivefor good reasons, said Theater Emory artistic director Vincent Murphy. We celebrate a man whos as engaged today, artistically and politically, as hes ever been. Indeed, when Fugard wasnt acting as assistant director (a title he relished) to Del Hamilton on his stirring 7 Stages production of My Children! My Africa!, he was directing brush-up rehearsals of the American premiere of his Playland, a co-production of Californias La Jolla Playhouse and Atlantas Alliance Theatre Company. An intense, exorcistic encounter between a black night watchman and a white ex-soldier in a deserted amusement park on New Years Eve, 1989, Playland is unquestionably Fugards most overtly theatrical work since Master Harold more than a decade ago. (The playwright joked that the whimsical-garish-brooding carnival set by Susan Hilferty, and the masterfully coordinated lighting and sound designs by Dennis Parichy and David Budries, will shock a lot of my critics in terms of production values.) And as his first major utterance since the release of Nelson Mandela, Playland may be Fugards most politically provocative play since the height of his anti-apartheid writings. As my country moves forward, said the playwright in his precise, lilting tenor, no amount of political blueprinting or committees can cross the real hurdles in the hearts and minds of men. That is: forgiveness. Coming to grips with the violence in our past, having the courage to say, Yes, I did thisplease forgive me. De Klerk keeps saying apartheid was misguidedthats not good enough, man! To hell with misguided it was evil! Fugards voice has risen so that it is shaking with rage as he spits out the last word. We must acknowledge that evil, as Germany did with the Holocaust. Otherwise, well have as our first inheritance only lies and hate and bitterness. The New South Africa will be a hollow phrase. Fugard chose to continue Playlands premiere in the spiritual hub of the Civil Rights Movement, immediately after the La Jolla run, out of a sense of poetic justice. In the welcoming words of Michael Lomax, a leading Atlanta politician and creator of the National Black Arts Festival; Mr. Fugard, we have a kinship with you. The playwright has corresponded for years with Atlanta friends, among them Nancy Kearns, a former 7 Stages dramaturg who wrote to him in South Africa from out of the blue; and actor-director Brenda Bynum, a Fugard specialist who met and befriended him at the 1987 Spoleto Festival USA production of his The Road to Mecca. The womens letters stoked his fascination with Atlantas civil rights history and its place as Mecca for the black professional class. Even to this day, it seems to me Atlanta is a touchstone, asserted Fugard, whose bristly beard and weathered face recall the tough-nut merchant seaman he was in his youth. Perhaps the essential American drama is being played out here certainly the greatest experiment. It was at a Theatre Communications Group conference in 1990 that Fugard met Alliance artistic director Kenny Leona 36-year-old black man whose past performances in Fugard plays are part of Atlanta lore. They became instant friends and vowed to collaborate. Wagging his finger as they parted, Leon said, Remember, we have an appointmentmischievously using the playwrights favorite word for his personal destinies. Fugard has sensed he had an appointment to write a play about forgiveness and South Africa since the late 70s. I was in New York, and I found myself in a bar late at night I was still drinking at this pointand I saw this man who seemedto have a cloud over him. Just staring at his shot glass. I sat down near him, and he looked up and said, Im not a killerIm not a killer. It became clear that I was talking to a Vietnam vet, and that something terrible I couldnt grasp the detailshad happened in Nam. Playland may have begun at that moment. The haunted vet became Gideon Le Roux, the bedraggled ex-soldier wandering into the carnival at nightfall, who fought the black SWAPO forces on the Namibian frontier. The image that torments him is one that Fugard came upon in a newspaper. There were two white soldiers standing in a truck full of black bodies, which they were dumping into a pit. Each of them had an arm as they had dragged this dead young man to the edge of the truck, and I thought, My God its like two Roman Centurions taking an African Christ-figure down from the Cross.' By making Gideon one of those centurions, Fugard created a character so wracked with guilt that he drunkenly, desperately seeks out a black man to beg for redemption. By a strange fluke, it turns out to be a night watchman, Martinus Zoeloe, who also bears the invisible scar of Number 6 (as in the 6th Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Kill) on his head. His compassion is tested to the extreme when the viciously taunting Gideon demands, Kill me or forgive me. Leon, whose two-and-a-half-year tenure has been marked by some white flight among subscribers in spite of a balanced, eclectic repertoire, saw that Playland had a message that Atlanta needs to heara message that doesnt make whites feel guilty or make blacks angry. As the director received freshly written pages of the play over the transatlantic fax last spring, America was reeling from the beatings of Rodney King and Reginald Denny; Atlantas street disturbances were among the worst in the country, second only to Los Angeles. It was uncanny to me, Fugard avows, his eyes wide with amazement, that my play was going straight into the two areas of the country where the pain had been the worst. I couldnt imagine how it would be received. One of those who took part in peaceful demonstrations in Atlanta in spite of classmates involvement in the near-riotswas Saul Williams, a 20-year-old student at prestigious Morehouse College. In his acclaimed professional acting debut in My Children! My Africa!, he was on the far shore of the debate, playing an enraged student who defies his teachers courageous plea for peace. I met Mr. Fugard with mixed emotions. I didnt know if such a play could be written by a white man. But I spoke to black South Africans who knew much of his work, and I was very impressed with the man himself. It was obvious the story came from the goodness of his soul. As much as the playwright appreciated newfound friends such as Williams, he was also profoundly affected by the angrier black students he addressed on local campuses and in the Alliance audience following preview performances. These exchanges, startlingly blunt even to the veteran of the apartheid wars, helped him clarify some of my own thinking about the situation in South Africa. Fugard quoted from his own Atlanta diary in an essay commissioned by the Atlanta Journal and Constitution: A black South African female student in her early 20s. She stared at me unflinchingly out of what I sensed was a deep well of smouldering resentment. I hesitate to use the word hate but it might well have been as strong as that. When she eventually spoke, the question was for Kenny, sitting next to me. How can you be his friend after what his people did to the black people of South Africa? Kenny spoke quietly. I will never forget his words. He is not a friend. He is my brother. If I do not forgive him, there is no hope for us in this world. Theater Emorys shrewdly selected repertoire of early, lesser-known Fugard worksHello and Goodbye (1965), Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act (1972) and the two-part readings of the adapted Notebooks: 1960-77opened a window of personal history through which to appreciate the most recent plays. For instance, the troubled anti-hero of Hello, Johnnie Smits, is spiritually shackled to and (in a transformation prefiguring Sam Shepard) ultimately becomes his crippled father. Johnnie was described by Fugard as that very timid side of me, always at war with the brave devil in me. Notebooks contained the germinal idea of nearly every Fugard play. Foreshadowing Statements, based on the true case of a black principal and white librarian who were prosecuted under apartheid law for their secret love affair, the playwright recorded the eerily beautiful sight of two cobras first mating almost upright on a garden wallthen hacked to bits by the gardeners spades: Six seconds in which me n destroy something only God can make. Directed by Bynum with an intimate, Beckettian spareness that brought its streaks of poetry into sharp relief, Statements was the festivals surprising gem. Its principals, Rob Cleveland and mary Lynn Owen, had just celebrated their first wedding anniversary. There had never been a way for us to express all the difficult things about our relationship, the uncomfortable vibrations we get from both whites and blacks, said Owen. Suddenly we had a place for all of that feeling to pour out, to come into focus. The actresss sense of vulnerability was only heightened by the knowledge that the creator of her character would be sitting only a few feet away. But Fugard put her fears to rest by approaching her at a pot-luck dinner that 7 Stages threw for the playwright and Atlantas theatre community. Mr. Fugard said to me, Youll find Im a wonderful audience. I eat up everything you give me.' .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 , .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 .postImageUrl , .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 , .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4:hover , .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4:visited , .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4:active { border:0!important; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4:active , .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4 .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uf181d8ccd02ab2a43ac68b49e2ccdde4:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: McTeague Persuasive Essay We will write a custom essay on The artist and the city specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now One the amusement park setting of Playland:à I came across an old entry from my notebooks about such a parkan icon of my youth! As hard-up as our family was, my mum always scraped together a few pennies so that we could have a few rides. That was my Christmas and my New Years. It was exclusively for whites in those days, but with a few matinees set aside for other races.Years later, I was driving through Karroo and I saw this sad little amusement park, encamped on the outskirts of a little town. It struck me what a visual setting it would be for a play, and what a metaphora place where people could go to play and to forget the harsh realities of their lives. On turning 60 and the New South Africa:à Just when there was the temptation to start thinking, Okay, its the home stretch now, my country throws the biggest drama of my entire life |the release of Nelson Mandela~ right in my face, and says, No, man! Wait a minute! Youve got another guess coming: weve only just started! The past was simple: I was ready to stand and be counted as a dissident voice. The future will be infinitely more complexrich, and provocative. There was some disturbing talk recently of cultural commissars and the correct thing for artists to sayit sounded a little like the old South Africa but from a different perspective. So I expect Ill go on as before, the outsider. On writing, and a sense of place:à When I sit down and face what I still lovingly call the Inquisition of Blank Paper, I feel I must be in South Africa, so thats why I spend half the year there. That country gives me my stories, for I understand its codes of life down to my bones. I have a house in the Karroo, outside of a little village with only 10 or 12 permanent residents. I become a bachelor when I writethank God Sheila |his wife of over 30 years~ understands this. Im self-sufficient there, with my windmill and my orchards, in my island of serenity and silence. Playland was mostly written there. On spirituality and his themes:à As I looked over what I had written in Playland, I was amazed to find more religious imageryor let me say instead, spiritual concernsthan I had been aware of. This was certainly a departure for meBut as Gideon tells Martinus, Gods forgotten usits just you and me tonight. Thats the essential theme in all my writing. In 234 pages, Burgess manages to introduce his reader to a young Shakespeare developing into manhood and clumsily fumbling his way through his first sexual escapade with a woman, through Shakespeareââ¬â¢s long, famed (and contested) romance with Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton and, ultimately, to Shakespeareââ¬â¢s final days, the establishment of The Globe theater, and Shakespeareââ¬â¢s romance with ââ¬Å"The Dark Lady.â⬠à Burgess has a command for language.à It is difficult not to be impressed and a little awed by his skill as a story-teller and an imagist.à While, in typical fashion, he does tend to break-off at points of leisurely prose into something more Gertrude Steine-like (stream of consciousness, for example), for the most part he keeps this novel in finely tuned form. This will be nothing new for readers of his best known work, A Clockwork Orange (1962). There is an exceptional arc to this story, which carries the reader from Shakespeareââ¬â¢s boyhood, to his death, with common characters interacting regularly and to an end result.à Even the minor characters, such as Wriothesleyââ¬â¢s secretary, are well-established and easily identifiable, once they have been described.à Readers might also appreciate the references to other historical figures of the time and how they affected Shakespeareââ¬â¢s life and works. Christopher Marlowe, Lord Burghley, Sir Walter Raleigh, Queen Elizabeth I, and ââ¬Å"The University Witsâ⬠(Robert Greene, John Lyly, Thomas Nashe and George Peele) all appear in or are referenced throughout the novel. Their works (as well as works of the Classicists ââ¬â Ovid, Virgil; and the early dramatists ââ¬â Seneca, etc) are clearly defined in relation to their impact on Shakespeareââ¬â¢s own designs and interpretations.à This is highly informative and simultaneously entertaining. Many will enjoy being reminded of how these playwrights competed and worked together, of how Shakespeare was inspired, and by whom, and of how politics and the time period played an important role in the successes and failures of the players (Greene, for instance, died sickly and shamed; Marlowe hunted down as an atheist; Ben Jonsonââ¬â¢s imprisoned for treasonous writing, and Nashe having escaped from England for the same).à That being said, Burgess takes much creative, though well-researched, license with Shakespeareââ¬â¢s life and the details of his relationship with various people.à For instance, while many scholars believe ââ¬Å"The Rival Poetâ⬠of ââ¬Å"The Fair Youthâ⬠sonnets to be either Chapman or Marlowe due to circumstances of fame, stature, and wealth (ego, essentially), Burgess breaks from the traditional interpretation of ââ¬Å"The Rival Poetâ⬠to explore the possibility that Chapman was, in fact, a rival for Henry Wriothesleyââ¬â¢s attention and affection and,à for this reason, Shakespeare became jealous and critical of Chapman.à Similarly, the ultimately under-established relationships between Shakespeare and Wriothesley, Shakespeare and ââ¬Å"The Dark Ladyâ⬠(or Lucy, in this novel), and Shakespeare and his wife, are all largely fictional.à While the novelââ¬â¢s general details, including historical happenings, political and religious tensions, and rivalries between the poets and the players are all well envisioned, readers must be careful not to mistake these details for fact.à The story is well written and enjoyable. It is also a fascinating glimpse at history of this particularly time period.à Burgess reminds the reader of many of the fears and prejudices of the time, and seems to be more critical of Elizabeth I than Shakespeare himself was.à It is easy to appreciate Burgessââ¬â¢s cleverness and subtlety, but also his openness and candor in terms of sexuality and taboo relationships.à Ultimately, Burgess wants to open the readerââ¬â¢s mind to the possibilities of what could have happened but is not often explored. We might compare Nothing Like the Sun to others in the ââ¬Å"creative nonfictionâ⬠genre, such as Irving Stoneââ¬â¢s Lust for Life (1934). When we do, we must concede the latter to be more honest to the facts as we know them, whereas the former is a bit more adventurous in scope.à Overall, Nothing Like the Sun is a highly informative, enjoyable read offering an interesting and valid perspective on Shakespeareââ¬â¢s life and times. withlockkahfang1987http://www.blogger.com/profile/00732669377088453714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4192152194153994705.post-8620447117773810322020-02-26T13:14:00.001-08:002020-02-26T13:14:03.238-08:00Regarding a Vision Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 wordsRegarding a Vision - Assignment Example Support for the creation of a vision and strategy recommendation of Kotter, 1996, can be seen in the needs analysis component of the needs assessment life cycle stage of Haddad, 2006. According to Kim and Mauborgne, 2003, p. 4, ââ¬Å"in any organization, once beliefs and energies of a critical mass of people are engaged, conversion to a new idea will spread like an epidemicâ⬠. What are the beliefs that the authors are talking about. In essence it is the new vision for the organization. In addition, their tipping point leadership concept of cognitive hurdle, resource hurdle, motivational hurdle, and political hurdle are guiding posts for the development the appropriate strategy for the change management process (Kim & Mauborgne, 2003). My ideas are rather more simplistic. I am in tune with what Kotter recommends. The change process involves a group of people heading off in a new direction. Therefore the first essential is where the group is headed to and that is the vision. Now there is the question on how to get there in the easiest way, without losing some of the group. The strategy is the answer to this withlockkahfang1987http://www.blogger.com/profile/00732669377088453714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4192152194153994705.post-61825763216152035982020-02-20T13:10:00.001-08:002020-02-20T13:10:02.397-08:00Hospitality Service Operations Management report EssayHospitality Service Operations Management report - Essay Example easure, track and monitor as well as continuously improving efficiency of services, quality and availability in hospitality operational environment (Knowles et al 2004). The strategy to be employed include external analysis (this assess the clients, the marketplace, and competition) self analysis (this is the evaluation of business performance) strategy identification (this covers product strategies like product profile, target, and position) there is also an aspect of functional strategy which is basically differentiation. Strategy selection is the last stage that includes real scenario with core competencies in play (Knowles et al 2004). The following are very critical components of marketing that were addressed before real implementation of the plan; strategic objective (market share and profitability), customers (products position and market segment), and strategic focus. The corporate market has been very tricky for Sunshine Hotel. This is indicated by the competitor sales report. This hotel is operating at average capital in relation to other hotels. Promotion - The marketing style adopted by hospitality Service Company was direct selling where advertisements were made through the media, fliers and mailing. Product- were packaged strategically so that clients could get packaged brands of services like transport accommodation and entertainment in one package. The hotel offered mini bar service, hotel shop, business service and internet (Kandampully & Sparks 2001). Price- the prices were set strategically in that some services will be packaged together, prices will vary seasonally and that collective purchases were discounted. Sales-sales were increased by diversifying the products; this means we operate bars, restaurants, accommodation, entertainment, transport, conference facility and internet. This resulted in the high corporate sales per weekday (847). Average room rates were fairly high (Kandampully & Sparks 2001). The difference between complementary treatment and alternative treatment is that in complementary treatment, medicine may be used while in alternative treatment, mainstream medicine is not used. Conventional and alternative treatment methods are many and are usually even administered by highly trained persons. These methods include: acupuncture, chiropractic, osteopathy, naturopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, aromatherapy, massage therapy, meditation, and yoga. Conventional medical practices or allopathic medicine is a term which is usually used by supporters of alternative treatment methods to denote mainstream use of manufactured agents or interventions to cure or to overwhelm symptoms or pathophysiological developments or even disorders. This treatment approach is a wide subdivision in the medical practice field which is used to refer to western medicine and medical practices. This method is also referred to as biomedicine or evidence based medicine or sometimes, modern medicine. These modern medical treatment practices have various importances: they are best when it comes to the treatment of traumatic conditions such as accident cases which would otherwise be hectic to treat using the alternative methods of treatment. These methods are also very flexible, they are flexible in that they can be administered online, where patients say their symptoms and then trained personnel can recommend the drugs to be taken. This is not available to most alternative treatment methods which majorly need strict observance by a trained instructor. However, this practice also has their drawbacks in that they are costly to access and requires training of the doctors. As pointed out earlier, acupuncture is one of the convectional and alternative methods of treatment. Years later Napoleon took Mona Lisa to his bedroom; it was also stolen from Louvre Museum once, which finally brought it a worldwide fame. But eventually the portrait got back to Louvre, where it stays to date. 2. King Tuthankhamuns tomb is full of ancient artworks devoted to this legendary Egyptian ruler. The Golden mask is one of them. Preserved in the Museum of Cairo it shows its visitors the luxury and sophisticated taste of King Tut. It is a masterpiece that is almost impossible to copy. Seven coffins of the King Tuts tomb bear the embossment of Tuthankhamuns face, each being an artwork of exquisite beauty. The Golden Throne is another masterpiece containing relief images of King and Queen, which tells us the story of their love. The status of which was the first co-operative is under some dispute, but various milestones in the history may be identified. In 1761, the Fenwick Weavers Society was formed in Fenwick, East Ayrshire, Scotland to sell discounted oatmeal to local workers. Its services expanded to include assistance with savings and loans, emigration and education. In 1810, Welsh social reformer Robert Owen, from Newtown in mid-Wales, and his partners purchased New Lanark mill from Owens father-in-law and proceeded to introduce better labor standards including discounted retail shops where profits were passed on to his employees. Owen left New Lanark to pursue other forms of co-operative organization and develop co-op ideas through writing and lecture. Co-operative communities were set up in Glasgow, Indiana and Hampshire, although ultimately unsuccessful. In 1828, William King set up a newspaper, The Cooperator, to promote Owens thinking, having already set up a co-operative store in Brighton. The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, founded in 1844, is usually considered the first successful co-operative enterprise, used as a model for modern co-ops, following the Rochdale Principles. A group of 28 weavers and other artisans in Rochdale, England set up the society to open their own store selling food items they could not otherwise afford. Within ten years there were over 1,000 co-operative societies in the United Kingdom. Other events such as the founding of a friendly society by the Tolpuddle Martyrs in 1832 were key occasions in the creation of organized labor and consumer movements. From the report of the workshop held on 10th ââ¬â 11th November 2008 during the 8 the ICA Africa regional assembly at the international conference centre, Abuja. Mr Tom Tar The Executive Secretary of Cooperative Federation of Nigeria, In his introduction of the movement in Nigeria, said the Cooperative Federation of Nigeria (CFN) was formed in 1945 and got registered in 1967. He traced the background of cooperatives in Nigeria to the traditional savings and loans system. He added that following agitation by the Agege Cocoa planters Union in 1907, the study for establishment of formal cooperation was commissioned in 1934. This was followed by the enactment of cooperative legislation in 1935. The early move was in agriculture and latter shifted to marketing following the shift in the Nigerian economy from agriculture to crude oil. He gave the scope of cooperative activities in Nigeria as covering: On population, he said there are about 5million family members covering 20 million house holds. This study is significant because it will produce data on cooperative movement in Nigeria that will be useful to: 1. federal ministry of labour and productivity 2. national union of local government employees 3. state civil service commission 4. federal civil service commission . 5. managers and top executives in organized private sector 6. united nation commission on employment 7. federal ministry of finance 8. Central bank of Nigeria 9. tudents carrying out a research work in this same issue. Cooperative society is the organization of people for an improved agricultural production (Strickland, 1934). Historically in Nigeria, the orientation and growth of cooperatives in Nigeria was related to the development of agricultural export sector by the Colonial Masters who invited an expert in 1934 known as C. F. Strickland who served in India to advice ââ¬Å"on the prospects and desirability of forming cooperatives in Nigeriaâ⬠(Nkom, 1984). Among the recommendations made by Strickland was the formation of Agricultural Marketing Cooperatives with the aim of pursuing the major export crops, like cocoa, cotton, palm produce farms in the country (Ekpere, 1980). From 1935-37, however, these east while production cooperatives were either transformed or designated cooperative produce marketing societies and unions. From 1960-1972, the role of farmer cooperative in the primary production process has been re-vitalized (Ekpere, 1980). Presently, the cooperative movement is on the increase for the search of sustainability in an agricultural system. Sustainability is possible when we encourage the agricultural activities of cooperatives. The organizational structure of cooperative societies is based on their operation, organization, structure, membership, functions and services (Scope) with the main aim of ââ¬Å"Collecting, processing and marketing specific commodities and providing with inputs, credit and technical services for benefits of members. Therefore, these cooperative organizations are usually arranged into ââ¬Å"tiersâ⬠. They are: The primary societies, secondary and Apex organization. Although the term may be used loosely to describe a way of working, a cooperative properly so-called is a legal entity owned and democratically controlled equally by its members. A defining point of a cooperative is that the members have a close association with the enterprise as producers or consumers of its products or services, or as its employees. In some countries, e. g. Finland and Sweden, there are specific forms of incorporation for co-operatives. Cooperatives may take the form of companies limited by shares or by guarantee, partnerships or unincorporated associations. In the USA, cooperatives are often organized as non-capital stock corporations under state-specific cooperative laws. However, they may also be unincorporated associations or business corporations such as limited liability companies or partnerships; such forms are useful when the members want to allow: some members to have a greater share of the control, or some investors to have a return on their capital that exceeds fixed interest, neither of which may be allowed under local laws for cooperatives. Cooperatives often share their earnings with the membership as dividends, which are divided among the members according to their participation in the enterprise, such as patronage, instead of according to the value of their capital shareholdings (as is done by a joint stock company). withlockkahfang1987http://www.blogger.com/profile/00732669377088453714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4192152194153994705.post-29930342382435977592020-01-27T17:18:00.001-08:002020-01-27T17:18:03.992-08:00Chinas Logistics IndustryChinas Logistics Industry Abstract The aim of this paper is to introduce development of China logistics industry in last decade. This paper examines problems during the development and the implementations to further develop China logistics industry in the future. The first part of this paper introduces the background of China logistics industry, problem statement and research objective. The measurements of development of China logistics industry are as dependent variables discussed in Chapter four. The second part talks about literature review for logistics, 3 elements in development of China logistics industry which are cost, productivity and expansion. Also, factors that affect development of China logistics industry are given which are transportation, governments regulation, warehousing and storage, IT supporting and infrastructure. Chapter three looks at research methodology which contains source of data, method of data analysis, questionnaire and interview. The theoretical framework shows the relationship between independent variables and dependent variables. Chapter four is mainly focuses on data analysis; the results are shown to indicate the main factors that limit the development of China logistics industry. Finally, the chapter five gives the conclusion and recommendation to solve the problems that effect development of China logistics industry that is integrated information technology to reduce transportation cost. KEYWORDS: logistics, cost, information technology, transportation. Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 Background of Study With the increase of the global competition and the rapid development of the Information Technology (IT), the logistics industry has become one of the most important industries in the 21st century. The scope and role of logistics have changed dramatically over recent years. In the past, logistics has played a supportive role to primary functions such as marketing and manufacturing. Now the scope of logistics has expanded beyond its traditional coverage of transportation and warehousing activities to include purchasing, distribution, inventory management, packaging, manufacturing and customer service. More importantly, logistics has dramatically evolved from a supportive role characterized and cost absorbing to a primary role and become an important of competitive advantage. Companies experiencing growing pressure to reduce costs and provide better service so that they engage in improving the logistics by outsourcing/expansion, an option that can improve both efficiency and effectiven ess. Modern theory of logistics in China was introduction in 1980s to pilot program of logistic and distribution centres built-up in early 1990s and then evolved into full-fledged industry by the end of 1990s. Since its economic reform and opening up in 1978, Chinas economy keeps booming, with an annual GDP growth rate of nearly 10 percent which has become a global manufacturing centre with its high economic growth rate (Wang et al. 2006). In 2001, a condition for China to become a full member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) was the removal of restrictions to foreign logistics investments. At the beginning, foreign capital was allowed only in form of joint ventures where Chinese partner held a majority (Goh and Ling, 2003). At the end of 2005, the restrictions were completely phased out. At present, state-owned, privately/locally owned, and foreign owned logistics companies are all equally allowed to enter and compete in logistics industry in China. Chinas logistic industry has been experiencing fast growth driven with the help of sustainable national economic expansion. Although there are tremendous opportunities, still the intense competition exists, especially after 2001. The logistics industry reported an annual growth rate of 31% in 1999, 35% in 2000, and 55% in 2001, and was expected to continue to expand rapidly in the future (Business knowledge on demand, 2007). According to Exhibit 1, the average annual growth rate of the logistics industry in China was 22.2%, and logistics expenditures accounted for about 21.8% of the GDP between 1992 and 2004 (business knowledge on demand, 2007). This sector has been developed in a physically sound way under improved infrastructure and external environment. According to Asia consulting, Added value has reached to RMB 1.4 trillion in 2006 up 13.9% over 2005. The transportation fee has been RMB 2.1 trillion increasing 12.1 %. The increase can be seen in inventory and delivery service along with 16.7% of warehousing fe es. It is expected that Chinas logistics market value will reach RMB1.1972 trillion, and will continue to maintain an annual growth of 20% in 2010. 1.2 Total Logistics Market Size The GDP of China is above RMB 10 trillion by the first time in 2002 that achieved a real growth of 8%. In the 10th Five-year Plan, the government is forecasting an average growth rate 7% per annum in 2002-2007. According to the forecasts by State Development Planning Commission (SDPC), the GDP will be quadruple, about US$4.3 Trillion by 2020. The price level will be stable because of higher price pressure within the economy. In a detailed survey by the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP), the total logistics market was estimated at RMB1, 788 billion, 20% of the GDP in 2000. In 2002, it was estimated that the total logistics market of China were about RMB 2 trillion. Though the economy was expanding in 7%, logistics expenses were going to increase in a slower rate. It was because there is sufficient supply of logistics capacity such as trucks, warehouses and other fixed assets. Government registration shows 700,000 logistics service providers are operating. On the othe r hand, improving logistics efficiency also reduces its proportion to the GDP. A moderate rate of 4.0%-4.9% growth is estimated in the coming five years. According to HK Trade Development Council, leading logistics companies in China such as UPS, FedEx and DHL-Sinotrans have all recorded annual growths in over 30% on operations in China and there are more outsourcing contributes to the growth of professional logistics firms. Moreover, as competition increases, it is expected that market share is shifting from local companies to foreign invested enterprises (FIEs) or local giants, who can offer more efficient services in lower fees.(LI FUNG, 2003) 1.3 Players in the China Logistics Market Chinas logistics market is fragmented, characterized by tens of thousands of logistics companies and many of them are small, poorly organized with fundamental infrastructure and technology. A vast majority of the players are lack of nationwide capabilities and serve a narrow customer base; and mainly focus on simple transportation and storage functions. Competition is fierce, particularly in the low-end market. Traditionally, Chinas logistics market is dominated by the state-owned enterprises (SOEs) which provide 90% of the logistics services, but none of these has a market share over 2%. 1.31 State-Owned Players There are many state-owned players in China logistics market. Prior to 1980, under economic conditions in that time, Chinas logistics business could only be managed by state-owned enterprises and logistics was a monopoly industry, mostly for transpiration and warehousing. The characteristics of their management mode are small-scale native enterprises, slow product renovation, poor management, production plans following from various government agencies, etc. Due to government investment and monopolistic operation, these enterprises acquired large assets and became relatively large-scale business firms. Relying on their sufficiency capital and existing market share, in the past several years these enterprises rapidly became leaders in China logistics industry. However, due to the monopolistic nature of the industry and the separated management system, it will take time for these logistics firms to become truly comprehensive. The following is a list of todays relatively powerful state-o wned backbone logistics enterprises that operate nationwide: China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO); China Railway Express Company Limited (CREC); China Post Logistics Company Limited (CPLC); China Railway Container Transport Company Limited (CRCTC), etc. COSCO Logistics COSCO Logistics is a branch of COSCO, China Ocean Shipping Company. It was formed in 2002. Because of the parent companys network and infrastructure, in 2004 to 2008 it ranked number 1 in China in terms of comprehensive logistics capacities. COSCO Logistics has 300 logistics facilities, covering 90% of the China market and the service is strongly marine transport related. 1.32 Private Players Since the mid-1990s, Chinas private domestic logistics enterprises started to develop themselves. For example: EAS International Transportation Ltd (Shanghai). This company was founded in 1985 and it involves international business. In the past twenty years, EAS has gained notable achievement in building the unique operation platform to development modern logistics business according to the demand of customers. There are many other private domestic logistics companies in China, such as St-Anda, PGL, China Overseas logistics and so on. They are all medium-size Chinese logistics provides emerged in the last 10-20 years. These firms have enjoyed the fastest growth in the market due to their light-asset nature and high efficiency. They are more focused on geographies, service and customers. But they have problems in lacking sufficient financial support for market expansion and internal management mechanisms and effective organization to support high growth and profitability. (Fu Qinqin, 2007) 1.33 International Logistics Players(ILCs) Although the domestic companies dominate the general China logistics market, ILCs are playing a more important role, and their market shares are increasing rapidly. Among which the most important are the four giant ILCs that started with parcel and courier services. The international logistics players are: DHL, TNT, UPS, FedEx and so on. Deutsche Post World Net/DHL Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN) has a uniformed brand and image for its logistics, courier and parcel, and transport service; that is DHL. DHL first entered China in 1981. In 1986, it formed a joint venture with Sinotrans in courier and parcel delivery. Mainly because of this earliest partnership, DHL-Sinotrans has the biggest market share in courier service. Both parties enjoy a very fruitful partnership. For this reason, in 2002 when the first partnership ended, DHL and Sinotrans renewed the cooperation agreement for another 50 years, till the year of 2052. In May 2004, DHL initiated its domestic delivery of parcels in China, and again, DHL led the market. In the courier and parcel delivery market, the partnership between DHL and Sinotrans is the most stable. In the past twenty years, DHL has invested about $215 million in China. Out of its total investment of $1.1 billion in Asia, that was only about 20% of DHLs investment in Asia. However, DHL plan to invest about $273 millions in China from 2004-2008, or almost 2/3 of its $400 million investment in Asia over the same period. Clearly, the investment is heating up in the China logistics market. (Xuepin Cen, 2005) Nowadays, many foreign logistics companies have established good cooperation relations with Chinese logistics firms by using joint ventures. The advantage foreign companies have competitive advantage in technology and management, but only when they are combined with experiences and existing service network of Chinese enterprises that they could be brought into full play. Therefore, some Chinese logistics companies usually face Merge and acquisition (MA) risk. A number of foreign companies that have never touched on the Chinese market patiently search for Chinese companies for cooperation projects. Many inland Chinese cities promise many commercial opportunities in the logistics sector, and it needs time for foreign companies to fully penetrate into the Chinese market. However, for foreign logistics companies they are being challenged by infrastructure and customer base and of lack of on-the-ground capabilities in China. 1.34 Third Party Logistics companies (TPLs) Chinas market for TPL is still in its early stage. Also, TPL is a relative new concept for most of the Chinese companies. A TPL company normally provides process-base services rather than a function-base logistics service, which generally toward to the integration and full control of a part or whole process of customers logistics network. The rationale for outsourcing logistics is to achieve cost saving through economics of scale. Small or middle sized companies may not always have economics of scale to economically manage logistics operation, but this is precisely one of the advantages for third-party logistics companies. The year of 2006 is the first year of Chinas 11th Five-Year Plan (2006~2010), and is also the first year when logistics is opened up completely. From the year of 2006 to 2010, the basic frame and main functions of Chinas southern international logistics centre will come into being. The proportion of logistics cost in GDP will decrease more than 3%. The third party logistics will share up to 23% in the logistics market.(Fu Qinqin, 2007) 1.4 Major modes of Transport The first few years of the 21st century have been characterized by the rapid construction of transport infrastructure in China. During the five-year plan from 2001 to2005, transport infrastructure has been built significantly including 250,000 kilometres of highways and 24,700 kilometres of expressways. By the end of 2006, the total length Chinese highway has reached 3,457,000 kilometres and 77,000 kilometres of railways (Waters, 2007). The current five-year plan (2006-2010) has an ambitious agenda and will spend hundreds of billions of dollars over the next five years to develop Chinas roads, river ports, and railroads. (Richard Brubaker,2005 ) 1.41 Ports According to Richard Brubaker, (2005) since the central government opened Chinese ports to overseas investment in March of 2002, Chinese Port facilities have received massive amounts of investment and have taken huge steps towards significantly increasing capacity. In 2003, the total investment in Chinese port development and construction was US$2.2 billion, and in 2004, the Ministry of Communication has reported this figure was to reach nearly US$4.3 billion in 2004. Currently, Chinas coastal cities like Dalian, Tianjin, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, are all competing to complete new berths and establish themselves as dominant regional logistics centres. (Exhibit 2) In Shanghai for example, container throughput of 11.28 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) for 2003 is expected to increase to 14.5million TEUs in 2004, with massive expansion already underway. In addition to expansion that will add more than 2m TEUs of capacity in 2005, Shanghais massive Yan gshan deepwater terminal is also under construction and will eventually handle 25m TEUs at a cost of â⠬1.5bn. Although such massive investment and expansion, the improvements brought by increasing use of foreign terminal operators, Chinese ports still need to keep up with increasing demand. 1.42 Road Benefit from government heavy investment and the unreliability of other options for instance rail and inland water, road transport becomes most popular choice for the inland distribution of goods in China. Beijing has already emphasised on a plan to double Chinas expressway mileage. (Richard Brubaker,2005) By 2005, as Chinas new inter-provincial highway system nears completion, almost 200,000 km of new roads will bring the national total to roughly 1.5 million km. Among the most significant of these developments, Shanghai-Chengdu Highway and Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway are the most arresting plan. Because most of Chinas highways are financed using a fixed return toll based system, tolls account for roughly 20% of costs faced by long distance trucking operators and create huge incentives to overload trucks. Nearly 75% of Chinas more than 100,000 traffic fatalities per year have been attributed to overloaded trucks. These deaths have led to new road safety laws, which if observed, could have significant implications for the efficiency and the costs of trucking operations where trucks are overloaded on average by 30% and often by 50%. However, at present the trucking industry in China remains extremely fragmented and is not organized on a national basis. The largest of the nearly 3 million trucking service providers in China is Sinotrans, with a registered fleet of 3,000 trucks specializing in long-distance service. Short-distance trucking services in China are generally provided by local operators who offer relatively cost effective and competitive services. In spite of national policies, this separation between local and long distance trucking operators is in part due to efforts by local and city authorities to protect local businesses. By the end of 2004, Chinas WTO commitments require that Chinas trucking sector be fully opened to foreign firms. Experts said that current market fragmentation and the benefits of newly expanded infrastructure make the trucking sec tor particularly attractive for consolidation and foreign investment. 1.43 Rail According to Richard Brubaker, (2005) Chinas Railway infrastructure has received relatively low levels of investment compared with Chinas road and port infrastructure. The Ministry of Railways has relatively modest plans to increase Chinas existing rail network from 72,000 km to 100,000 km in 2020. Use of the Chinese rail system increased 6% year on year between January of 2003 and January of 2004, though it would appear that this relatively modest increase can be less attributed to weak demand than the limitations posed by serious under capacity. Railway bottlenecks and the inability of the railway system to transport the requisite amounts of coal were in large part responsible for the power shortages of the summer of 2004. This has since led to the prioritization of coal shipments leaving other commodities and cargoes sitting on docks. Many importers, most notably Chinas steel mills have been struggling to find enough railcars to carry cargo and now often resort to barges and truck s at much greater cost. Poor handling practices, delays, unpredictable delivery times, bulk shipment requirements, theft, minimal shipment tracking, the lack of inter-modal facilities, and a general lack of infrastructure all plague the Chinese railways. However, despite these issues exist, the heavy subsidization still makes Chinas railway become the cheapest form of overland transport compare with shippers. 1.44 Inland Waterways Infrastructure on inland waterways, most significantly the Yangtze River, increased 8% between January 2003 and January 2004. (Richard Brubaker,2005) Rivers such as the Yangtze can handle ships of up to 6000 tonnes and are generally uncongested; however, canals and low bridges can be problematic and projects such as the recently completed 3 Gorges Dam can serve to prolong dry seasons and keep water levels low. 1.45 Air freight Although Chinas airfreight sector is constrained by inadequate infrastructure, its development has been rapid. China is the second-largest domestic airfreight market in the world after the United States. According to Boeings World Air Cargo Forecast, the market has grown at more than 20 percent annually since 1991. (Richard Brubaker,2005) Airports are seeing rapid expansion in three principal economic areas: the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), the Pearl River Delta (PRD), and the capital city of Beijing. Expansion in the PRD is very important that it threatens to cut into the volumes handled by Hong Kong, the worlds largest air cargo airport. But a large proportion of the goods exported from South China are routed through Hong Kong. Its position has been strengthened, moreover, by an agreement that allows Chinese airlines to expand their international services via Hong Kong and gives Hong Kong airlines greater access to the mainland. 1.46 Warehousing Most of Chinas warehousing facilities are older or old-style facilities with a range of associated issues. Many facilities do not have computerized stock supervision systems in place. Single and multi-story warehouse designs limit efficiency by preventing the use of multiple racking levels and by modern forklift trucks. Cross contamination is an issue as are unsealed loading platforms at refrigerated facilities, which expose food products to ambient air temperatures during loading and unloading. The shortage and shortcomings of existing facilities as well as the opening up of the Chinese warehousing under its WTO commitments by the end of 2005, have led to considerable investment and anticipation in this sector. (Richard Brubaker,2005 ) For example, in Shanghai, several foreign logistics services providers hoping to invest in the future and capitalize on preferential policies and proximity to port facilities (including APL Logistics, DHL and OOCL Logistics) have or are planning to es tablish massive logistics centres in Shanghais Waigaoqiao Logistics Park / Free Trade Zone. The park has been established as an international transit, delivery, sourcing and transhipment hub to promote and coordinate the development of Shanghais sea and air transport, warehousing and logistics industries. 1.5 Statements of the Problem 1.51 High Cost Since the late of 1990s, China has been aiming at fostering logistics industry and improving logistics management skills, for the huge manufacturing industries in China has driven logistics industry growing rapidly in recent years. With its imminent entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), China is embracing a big opportunity to develop its logistics industry, officials and experts noted. Zhang zhigang, deputy director of the State Economic and Trade Commission (SETC), said that: it is urgent that China reforms its old circulation system and speeds up the development of its logistics industry as China faces new challenges in the globalization process. But the high logistics cost nibble the competence of firms. According to the data released by Development Research Center of the State Council of PR China, Chinas logistics expenditures amounted to 20% of the GDP in 2000 whereas logistics spending accounted for 10.3% of United Statess GDP, 14% of Japans GDP, and 10 to 13% of Europ ean Unions GGP (Waters, 2007). The annual growth rate of total logistics expenditures is 10.29, 12.99, 16.76 and 12.86 percent from 2002 to 2005 (National Development and Reform Commission, 2004). Statistics published by China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing show that Chinas total logistics expenses reached RMB3.8414 trillion in 2006, up 13.5% year on year at current price, a growth 0.6 percentage points higher than in 2005. The rate of total logistics expense of GDP was 18.3%, 0.2 percentage points lower than in 2005. This is the mainly problem that slow down the development of China logistics industry. The total logistics cost encompasses transportation, inventory storage and management. In 2007, the total logistics cost increased by 18.2% to 4540.6 billion yuan. The total logistics cost in China generally includes three cost components, namely, transportation, inventory storage and management cost. According to Exhibit 3, it is clear that the total logistics cost increased rapidly during 1991-98, since then the growth started levelling off. In 2004, the total cost amounted to 2911.4 billion yuan (US$ 352 billion), grew by 16.6%. Of this total, transportation cost made up the largest portion and witnessed the highest growth rate. Transportation cost was 1655.8 billion yuan (US$ 200 billion), accounting for 56.9% of the total logistics cost. On the other hand, inventory storage and management cost were 846.7 and 408.9 billion yuan (US$ 102 billion and US$ 49 billion), accounting for 29.1% and 14% of the total logistics cost respectively (US$ 15.7 billion). Adding the costs of packing, transport, storage and damage, the ratio of total logistics costs to total industry production ranges from 40% to 60%, whereas in the United States this percentage is close to 20% (Smyrlis, 2006). If logistics costs are broken down, transport accounts for 57% of costs, inventory and storage accounts for 29%, and management accounts for 14% (Exhibit 4). Percentage wise, transport costs in China are twice as expensive as in developed countries (Wakers, 2007). 1.52 Low in productivity The ratio of total logistics cost to GDP represents the efficiency of logistics operation in the economy which means the productivity of logistics industry. It is also used as an indicator of the development level of the logistics industry. In general, the higher the percentage, the less efficient is the logistics industry. Exhibit 5 shows the total logistics cost as a percentage of GDP in the 10th Five-year Plan period (2000-2005). Despite the total logistics cost as a percentage of GDP has been on a downward trend that decreased from 19.4% in 2000 to 18.57% in 2005 and the total cost savings in the 10th Five-year Plan period totalled 109 billion yuan; according to exhibit 3, the logistics cost was still higher than that in US, Japan and developed countries which means lower inefficiency of China logistics industry. As predicted by the CFLP, the ratio of total logistics cost to GDP will continue higher that resulting inefficiency of modern logistics services. CFLP predicted that tot al logistics costs during the 11th Five-year Program period (2006-2010) will grow at 10% annually, 2% lower than that of the 10th Five-year Plan period. It also forecasted that the total logistics cost will reach 5,400 billion yuan in 2010, the ratio of total logistics cost to GDP at around 16.8% and cost savings yield during the period will be around 435 billion yuan. 1.53 Slowly expansion/outsourcing One of the most significant drivers of growth in the global logistics industry is the trend of mergers and acquisitions. Such buyouts and mergers enable logistics players to build up their infrastructure and service scale, both of which are critical to remaining competitive. By merging their operations and collaborating on technology, complementary services partners can also scale up their logistics capability without having to invest heavily in infrastructure. The result is lower cycle-time, streamlined business processes and lower manpower costs, which in turn boosts companies productivity and profitability. Although the giant logistics companies in China have overseas offices established from the 1980s and 1990s as their overseas branches to support their international transportation, their businesses are heavily dependent on agents. For example, Sinotrans has business in 200 countries, but there are only 40 overseas offices. The most international business is done via the agents. As Contrill claimed, dont expect a wave of Chinese 3PLs to land on Western shores soon. The pace of change in China is slow by Western standards and there is much to do in the home market. 1.6 Research objective The objective of this research is twofold. On one hand, the objective is: To understand the development of China logistics industry in last decades. On the other hand is to investigate the factors affect the development of China logistics industry and find the solutions to solve the current problems to further develop logistics industry in China. On meeting the two objectives this paper will develop a framework to address the factors that affect the development of China logistics industry. 1.7 Research questions There questions will be discussed in this article: 1: To introduce the development of logistics industry in China in last decade. 2: What are the factors that affect the development of China logistics industry? 3: How to solve the current problems to further develop logistics industry in China? 1.8 Significance of study This research would contribute by indicating and analyzing some of the problems that affect development of China logistics industry and this study was designed to answer some questions from perspectives of both the researcher and some practitioners. The theoretical framework was based on an extensive review of the literature on the various theoretical models of factors affect development China logistics industry. 1.9 Limitations of the research Because of time restriction (from September to November, 2009), this thesis will be finished within 3 months, I will cover the detail of logistics management (Transportation, Warehousing and IT supporting) as specific as possible. Because of the location of sampling in Shanghai, China, the searcher has to come to China but only around 1month, so time limited to the questionnaire distributing and receiving which cause low response rate. There are many problems that influence the development of logistics industry in China; in this paper, we only focus the above 5 main problems. Because of some companies are not public listed companies, it is difficult to find the financial data from the current annual reports released by these companies, so we may analyze these companies using the previous data (Eg: Annual Report in 2007) Some of questions are directly related to the internal strategy of company management, so managers are unwilling to answer. 1.10 Chapter Outline Chapter one Introduction: This provides the reader with background information of the study, which creates a pictorial flow of the main research. Chapter 2 Literature Review 2.1 Definition of logistics Logistic is the process of planning, implementing, and controlling the efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services and related information from their point of origin to point of consumption for the purpose of conforming to custom withlockkahfang1987http://www.blogger.com/profile/00732669377088453714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4192152194153994705.post-22060023369329032652020-01-22T13:42:00.001-08:002020-01-22T13:42:03.629-08:00Essay --The world is going through great clinical developments in the field of medicine and treatment . Where researchers through their experiences they try to find an end to many diseases And one of the Successful approaches is using originate cells to treat diseases for example Parkinson's and diabetes. So we can say that treatment utilizing stem tissues came to remedy the problem of diseases that medicine could not handle. Even though drugs deal with many illnesses, there is continue to a lot of conditions that treatment could not handle. I really believe that stem cell therapy as an effective alternative for the management of incurable ailments but exactly what is stem tissue? ?and exactly where do they originate from ? ? Stem cells are unspecialized tissues that have two most important features that make them different from other cells in the human body. First, they can increase their numbers for too long periods by means of cell division. Second, every time a stem mobile phone divides to hundreds of originate cell , each and every new originate can separate during early on life of them, and become specialized cells like red blood flow cell , muscle mass cell, human brain cell , or nerve mobile. In this century, scientists started out research concerning how to use originate cells to treat incurable illnesses. As well as they extracting embryonic stem adult and cells originate cells to increase the number in scientific labs.. Scientists found ways to derive embryonic originate cells from early mouse embryos almost 31 years ago, in 1981. The comprehensive study in the biology of mouse stem cells generated the discovery. At a later time , in 1998, of a strategy to derive stem cells from human embryos a nd expand the cells in the lab. ... ... I believe all this information about stem cell treatment will really support scientist to accrue numerous diseases .additionally my inerview with Mr.Mohamad Farooq , I believe that stem mobile is very important and this will be useful later on .Also , he explained to me , that stem cell therapy is very expensive because it needs doctors and manpower .He add an additional point ,that they must make sure that the cells are healthy and ready to use. In general , he was highly agree about stem mobile therapy . To sum up , originate cells really are important for living organisms .Exclusively for treating illnesses such as diabetic issues, and cardiovascular disease. In my perspective , this way of treatment will truly help unwell people and offer them the opportunity to treat . lastly , I really wish in future to be more useful and anyone can treat with stem mobile. withlockkahfang1987http://www.blogger.com/profile/00732669377088453714noreply@blogger.com0
